    Hi guys,
For some reason my recorder will refuse to record certain programmes that I've set up in series link. For instance I have 'Everybody Loves Raymond' set up to record daily but some days I'll get home in the evening and it hasn’t recorded anything - even though the programme was aired.

Also another issue which is annoying is I have 'Match Of The Day' on series link. It was set to record Sunday morning, which I thought I'd watch when I wake up. So when I woke up I looked at the recorder and it was still in standby mode when the programme was obviously on. So I switched on the unit and it then suddenly started automatically recording!!! There was only 10 mins left of the bloody programme!!!!

Most of the programmes I set up seem to record fine but this issues seems to be very random and is getting worse.

I've had a bit of a search and it seems others are having similar problems with their box. The box is just under 12 months old and already had the v1.65 installed before purchase.

I have written to Sony and also the place I purchased it from -still awaiting a reply.

    Thanks in advance

series link is titally dependent on the broadcaster setting the epg start and stop signals and everything else that goes with it

so it may not even be a fault on the recorder

the only safe way to get a program recorded is to use the manual timer mode , so you can set it with the guide , then remove epg and series link and set it to say "every sun" for sunday , padding both ends of the programme so you definitely get it

some channels are better at series link and epg than others , but problems do arise on all channels from time to time , so manual timer recording tends to be the safest option although it is best when programme times are set every week , ie:- same time every week works best for timer recordings

I use manual timers on sarah connor on virgin , or supernatural on itv2 , as its mush safer , and I start 10 minutes before and add 10 minutes to the end

I've sent both Sony and the place of purchase an email stating my problem so hoping they'll get back to me soon. It should still be under warranty as its not 12 months old yet. If I dont hear from them by Wednesday I'll give them a call.

warranties are for manufacturing defects etc , and this problem may not be covered as it is dependent on the broadcaster sending these signals , something that sony or pioneer have no control over

v1.65 is correct for the software bug fix for series recording , but several times recently these failed recordings have come up and it is usually down to the broadcasters being at fault

Ok thanks - I didnt think to use manual timer recording. Most of the programmes I record are on at the same time daily so this may be the best option.

However I'm still confused as to why my box didnt start recording a programme until I turned it on (from standby).

I appreciate your concern but as I said series link is dependent on several factors including the broadcasters themselves

not going out failed on friday for a number of people including on sky plus as well as dvd recorders , so obviously something was amiss there , although its repeated tonight so I have added those details to those threads just now

if series link works on say "doctors" today, or "who do you think you are" tonight or tomorrow on bbc , then its pretty safe to assume that in general it works , and so sony or pioneer could argue its not the machine but the broadcaster who is at fault

having been caught out before by issues like this , I reset the epg to manual recording and change the date to every sun for supernatural , or other programmes that are locked onto 1 time slot and regular as clockwork , and it doesnt matter if you over record as you can top and tail any recording very easily using the a to b edit , or just watch and erase

I am not saying you havent got a fault , but its going to be hard to prove and if the unit is over 6 months old the consumer has to prove its inherently defective by employing a specialist and getting a report , under 6 months its taken that the manufacturer has to prove its not faulty

some people assume a warranty is a get out of jail free clause , it isnt , it protects your consumer rights , but not against outside influences

lets assume you buy a new focus , go to the garage and fill it up , and it conks out due to the petrol tank being full of water and not petrol , it isnt up to ford to fix it for you as the warranty doesnt cover 3rd party issues

and sony wont cover you for series recording foul ups caused by the broadcasters , just wanted to make it crystal clear for all reading this

I have 4 of these recorders , and in general they work very well , with another dozen or so with family and friends , so believe me I would know if there were serious issues with them

the odd glitch like "not going out" maybe , but a fault ? I doubt it

How strange! I just this minute had a phone call from the place of purchase (digitaldirect) and they are picking up the unit for repair or replacement.

I'll update you guys if they manage to rectify this.....

Thanks for your advice ramjet - going on what you're saying theres a chance they may return the box stating 'no issues found'. If this is the case then I guess theres nothing I can do except record everything manually.

Its a shame really that the broadcasters cant get this right everytime considering how many people use Timer record function on their SKY+ or Freeview boxes. To be fair around 90% of the time it works fine but on the odd occassion it fails to record, which is becoming increasingly annoying.

Anyway like I said I will update this thread if they find an issue or not.

Got a phone call yesterday to say the unit will be delivered back to me today. Apparently it did have software issues which Sony recitifed (under warranty).

    Hope this sorts the issues!

For the first time last night two programmes (Skins and Dexter) failed to record. I've had trouble with series recording before so I set them individually each week using EPG.

    Any ideas?

And how can I check I have the latest updates? It's set to receive them automatically.

We are also having similiar problems with the series timer on cornation street -= it seems to miss random program. I personally dont think it is the broadcaster at fault as we also have a sony HXD560 which we have set up the same series timer on coronation street and it is working properly so suggest the issue is with the 870 software
