Leading Edge Concepts have this in stock and for sale for £350.

    Also the 250GB HX910 from w/c 25/4 for £600.

    http://www.leconcepts.com/dvd_home.htm

Seem to remember that the big drawbacks of the HX900/1000 models were

    - no flexible recording
    - no divide function
    - max 8 timers

See on the spec that it has "Variable Bit Rate Recording (60-360 Minutes)" - does that cover flex recording? Not sure about whether the other two weaknesses have been solved.

Anyone have any more information on these?

Will they really have the 910 in stock this month? According to Sony Centres the release date is October and September for the 710.
See various other threads for details.
I've looked at the link and can't see mention of Digital Terrestial TV Tuner (unless I've missed it) so are these machines possibly a different spec to those due for the UK?
If these are the UK machines, with Digital Tuners, then I'm really pleased as it means that at last we are getting the first properly specified boxes in the UK earlier than was thought!

Based on this month's What Video and TV...

The 510 is the base model without the digital tuner. Due for release in May.

The 710 / 910 are supposed to have digital tuners - maybe the 910 on the leconcepts website either has the wrong delivery date or is a grey import?

No mention of any of these models on the Sony website - maybe I'll give Sony a call...

Sony have confirmed that this model has been released, but they have no details yet!

Specifications may be released over the next week or two, on their website.

According to "Leading Edge Concepts" the 910 does not have digital tuners. They say the only SONY product which has Freeview is the GX500.

I've just spoken to Sony and they say the release dates for the 710 is still September and the 910 is still October.
However they did say that this may change so we will see.
Further news (on Sony website-press centre page) is that another model the RDRHX 1010 with a 400 Hard Disc is to be launched. No release date yet though!

Seems as though saying the 710 and 910 are in stock seems like an attempt to push sales by saying all three machines are due out in April/May. when in fact the 710 and 910 are still not due until September/October.
I assume that when HowardMG rang Sony they said it was the 510 (no Freeview) that's out and not the 710 and 910?
Also sounds like "Leading Edge Concepts" have either made a mistake about the 710 and 910 not having Freeview Tuners or they're being misleading in order to sell the 500 which has been out for a while now??

RDR-HX710/910 with no digital tuner are available now (at least in Germany). UK versions with Freeview will probably be named RDR-HXD710/910 when (or if) they show up in Sept-Oct.

Yes Sony UK confirmed that its the 510 that's out now.
And I guess the 910 which "Leading Edge Concepts" will be getting in a couple of weeks may be the non UK non freeview models. Or they've got the arrival date wrong.

Sony have now added specs for the 510 and 1010 on their website:-

    http://www.sony-europe.com/content/attachment/Press_Release_Sony_RDR-HX510.pdf

    http://www.sony-europe.com/content/attachment/Press_Release_Sony_RDR-HX1010.pdf

No mention of freeview, probably because these are generic european specs.

Nice to see that the number of timer settings have gone up from the measly 8 to 30.

And I think (but I'm no expert) they have added flexible recording and decent editing / divide etc.

So maybe the 3 faults of the HX900/1000 models have been rectified...

Does this new model solve all the missing editing characteristics that everybody is complaining about, concerning the Sony HX recorders editing capabilities?

Until we see a review I think thats a tricky one to answer, but it looks promising:-

"This technology enables the DVD recorder to recognise significant scene changes and insert chapter marks using ‘Intelligent Scene Chaptering’. The user can then select their desired scene easily by using the ‘Visual Chapter Search’ function, which displays a small thumbnail image of the beginning of each chapter. To delete a scene, the user simply employs the ‘Scene Chapter Edit’ function to select and then delete the scene."

    Spec includes

    Easy Chapter Edit
    Title Divide

So it does look like what we are missing.

But we still miss the digital tuner. It should have it, it makes no sense otherwise.

I got an interesting reply from LE Concepts re 910 as follows:-

    Dear Sir,

    Thank You for your enquiry.

The Sony RDR-HX910 will not have a digital tuner on board but Sony may release a variant of this model with this feature towards the last quarter of this year.

    Thank You for your patience.

    Please check back regularly.

So Grey or not Grey... I think we got the answer.

Well it does seem as though we're hovering on the brink of the UK getting the machines the market deserves.
As has been said, there's no point in Sony making these needed improvements if they don't also include Digital Tuners!
Let's also look forward to the Panasonic for comparison, as it looks as though Sony and Panasonic are going to be the first to bring out what we want. :hiya:

Can anyone confirm whether the 510 does have DV-in as some web retailers claim?

Sony have just emailed me a pdf of the manual for the HX510/710/910 and it shows the 510 model as not having DV-in (iLink) whereas the HX710 and HX910 do.

Think flexible recording means the ability to set the resolution so that its the best possible quality to fit a recording on to one disc

Can confirm the RDR-HX510 does NOT have a DV In. Was going to buy one on Saturday at my local Sony Centre until i noticed this socket was missing. Sony might get it right eventually with the 710 & 910 models.

Ps garydhooper can you mail me the manuals ?

    Thanks

Sony seem to have lost the plot with their DVD recorder range.
Currently the UK web site only lists the GXD500 as available... then under a separate link, list the GX210 and GX510!

The, cheaper, GX210 has iLink (firewire) whereas the HDD GX510 does not!

As most Sony products are made up to a few years in advance of the release I am sure they will bring forward the release of more new models as supplies of the older models dry up in the UK.

We need a Freeview tuner equipped HDD DVD recorder with HDMI now! Before it is too late and Blue-ray is upon us!

Looks like the 710 and 910 are in stock here:
    http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/tv-video/dvd-player-recorder/50/3/categorie.html

710 looks like good value (about £60 more than the 510) given that it has 160Gb and DVin.

I'm just waiting to see if the RGB issue that has been reported on the 210 and 510 also exists on the 710.

P.S. If you want a PDF of the 510/710/910 instruction manual that you can get it by emailing Sony tech support using the following link:

Hi garydhooper it was mentioned earlier in this post that Pixmania had these recorders. The problem with them is that they do not list any Freeview Tuner. I suspect That these are the European models (Pixmania is French) as i also found that LE Concepts are also selling these models also without the Freeview Tuner and their responce was to say that Sony may release a variant of this model with this feature towards the last quarter of this year. I suspect these 'Variants' will be the UK versions.

If Pixmania were to say that their HX-910's had a digital Tuner i would buy one but that.. sadly is not the case.

Also i suspect the UK Models will have a 'D' identifyer in the model number. ie RDR-HXD910 as listed at Cheap Electricals :- http://www.cheapelectricals.co.uk/acatalog/Sony_RDRHXD910_RDR_HXD910_rdrhxd910_rdr_hxd910.html

If anyone wants me to send them a copy of the Sony 510/710/910 manual then please send me a PM with your email address. Unfortunately the manual is larger than the maximum size for an attachment that I can post here. If you dont get a reply from me (probably 'cos I've got fed up sending out copies :) )then you can get a copy direct from Sony here:
    http://www2.sony.co.uk/feedback/feedbackform.asp
(I got a reply from Sony in about 24/48 hours.)

Anyone out there actually ordered a 710 (or 910) yet?

I'm interested in the 710 but wanted to find out if the RGB in/out issues that have been reported on the 210 and 510 also exist on the 710.

good news on the hx1010!

I think 'flexible recording' means that if your recording is say, 2hrs 10mins long, it will then choose '3hr' mode, degrading the quality!!

a lot of reviews say that trimming the recording is not possible, to stop this action...

when it is verified (If there is an owner out there who knows how to do this!!) that it is possible(on the HD) to :-
    - mark up the recording for editing.
    - delete content between these marks.
    - change the order of these marked 'chapters' (the tosh uses a playlist)
    - edit the name of the title and chapters.

I realise sony may have given these functions strange names, which may confuse the reviewers.. so please speak out!

There is competition from panasonic and pioneer, with their 'fast start' , 'fast DVD copy' and other things like net streaming and addon keyboards... :)
