    Hi

It would appear that some of the inital reports that GXD500 would reencode the Freeview signal could be misinformed. The press release for the GXD500 appears to state that it will record the digital Freeview signal "high picture quality recording by “full” digital process, without having DA/AD conversion in any of the encoding process.". If this is the case

    to Sony.

Not at all - the signal is certainly re-encoded as MPEG2 for DVB is quite different from MPEG2 for DVD - the question is whether it goes through the analogue domain. HCC articles mention the 2pass re-encoding - but I am almost certain there is confusion in that article between the 2pass re-encoding on their HDD/DVDR combos and re-encoding on their standalones. 2pass encoding is by definition not realtime. That said maybe the unit also offers single pass re-encoding. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
