Sony RDR-GX7 owners, how often do you get dirty disk errors?

    Hi,
I own a GX7, and I have been getting lots of the dirty disk errors. IE about 1 disk in 3 came up with the error.
The disks I used are brand new and are not dirty.

I sent my GX7 back for repair, and they gave it a software update, it is now supposed to be "fixed".
I have tried about 9 new disks since repair, and 3 of them came up with the error again, when recording. Is this normal?

How often do you get the dirty disk error?

Do you think I should send my GX7 back for repair again?

    Thanks for any help.

I've had one disc refuse to play totally because of this.

Mind you my son had fingered it quite substantially and it really was quite bad!

    Hi CLH,

    Thank you for your reply.

In my case, the disks are brand new, coming out of a sealed packet.
    No finger prints or dust,

Maybe I just have a bad machine.....

Does sound that way. Mine plays most dirty stuff fine.

That one disc was almost white with milk. Don't know how he got hold of it!

I had the same problem on my GX7, but only with Nashua -R discs (7 out of 10 failed brand new form the box). No other brand has given me any problems. It seems to be the media and not the recorder.

I had a bad lot of Sony dvd-r's, 4 out of 5 gave me the dirty disk error.
But ive also had the error with TDK before.

Oh well, i'll just keep testing the machine, and if I keep getting the error, i'll have to send it back again.

    Hi Guys

    Thanks for the help.

It's been two weeks since I had the last dirty disk error. so maybe it's fixed after all, maybe it was just some bad disks after all???

Got my GX3 delivered last week, along with a pack of 10 Memorex DVD-RW's. Unwrapped them all and could only get 1 to format - the rest got the dirty disk error!

As a test I burned some video onto the failing ones using my PC, and they played back fine on the Sony. I then tried to format them again in the GX3 and still got the same error!

Can anyone recommend -RW media that the Sony seems to like?

Duster, I'd be interested to know if the original media which failed for you will now format - i.e. could it be that this is a problem that effects new machines with certain media, but goes away once they 'wear in'?

Maxell -RW or -R in video cases. Get mine for £1.49 each from Richer Sounds using the What HiFi voucher. Not the BEST value ever but they are good discs with an amaray case.

    Otherwise all TDK's work.
