Just received an email from Avland in relation to the planned UK release, of the Sony RDR-A1 DVD Recorder, in May.

Apparently UK release now looks doubtful.

I wonder if this is a technical or market based decision?

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Pip

You may be interested to know that this is apparently a rebadged Pioneer DVR7000 anyway, as Sony are currently looking into support of a different format:) Wait till April, The Panasonic DMRE20 will be price- repositioned to £799 retail (currently £999) so should resulting in street prices of about £600-700ish).

    Or just get the Pioneer:)

    Cheers

The Pioneer DVR-7000 retails for £1,200. It's a good machine, just come into stock this last week.

ReTrO, may I ask the what's the recording standard like? There's lots of 'video quality' to near dvd bandied about but what do think of it?
These are heading in the right direction price wise but I spose the blue laser appearance will be the one to wait for.
Still for those who've bought or are going to discs can be had for £1.99 r and £3.25 rw.

I've not had the chance to make any reordings my slef yet due to disc cost. But the ones I've seen have been good, at the max data rate, 2hrs on a 4.7gb DVD-R.

The Pioneer DVD's cost £10 for each DVD-R and around £18 for the DVD-RW's, though we can get TDK DVD-R's for £8.

As I said above, you can get the discs much cheaper now as you can avoid the Pioneer/Sony etc brands and costs. Datasafe and Princo are decent cdr/rw and now dvd r/rw manu's to mention two. It's not worth getting slayed for own brand stuff unless you like badge symmetry. :p

It won't burn onto any form of CD's that i'm aware of. I'd have to check whether it requires 'video' DVD's to record onto or not (like some CD recorders need 'audio' CDR's).

Are the Datasafe and Princo data in particlular?

No mate, you misunderstood, they are actual dvd r and rw discs! I meant the firms ALSO make cds as an attempt to set the scene that they are worthwhile makers to make buys of.

Isn't Philips going to release a unit that records Dolby Digital 5.1 (either through digital or 6 phono line in)?
I'm pretty sure that's on the cards.
