Does anyone know if and when the UK will ever be 'blessed' with the presence of the new Qualia 006, a 70-inch rear-projection TV powered by a liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) chip.

I realise this is the DLP thread, but as a Rear Pro unit I thought this would be better here.

Granted, we are so far behind the US who have had this SXRD technology for a year now. But I was sure I saw an article on the CES in Home Cinema Choice which had info on this new set and a possiblity it may come to the UK if demand was enough.

Surely with the growing increase in the UK of HD capable sets such as DLP units and Plasmas and the fact that we can now see our own sets going up to 60" in size, this stunning 70" set has a growing market in the UK.

Here is an informative review from the US.

Hi skywalker

I have an Optoma RD65 which as you've probably gathered is a 65' DLP set. I am looking forward to the release of the 70'Sony and if it is any good I wlill be considering trading my set in.

Wow - what a beauty!

The specs are something else too (2 * HDMI's!).

Trouble is though its the cost of these units - from what I understand - that one will be around the $15K (USD) mark.

Sony are meant to be launching a Grand Wega SXRD set in the USA which will be around the $10K (USD) area - however, the specs are not that far removed fromthe Qualia.

Hi Gordon,

That was a very cryptic response!

When you say "soon", I take it, you are referring to a UK launch?

Next question(s), how soon, and how much?

T.

Hi Gordon,

Please, throw us a bone!......I know you have details on a UK release of the Qualia 004 Front Projector, something I am also interested in.

My ideal set up is the 006 in my living room and the 004 set upstairs in my cinema.

Any info on these two beauties would be great, UK prices and release dates.

My spies say Easter.....not sure on price but I suspect better than you are all thinking...your local Sony Centre would be the place to seak clarification I'd think....they'll know the full facts before me I'd imagine ;)

i work for sony and we hav'nt been told anything yet!!!! we product book which takes us upto the end of december 2005(which only came out about 6 weeks ago)nothing in there the first plasma, lcd and dvd players with hdmi aint due untill oct i rekon maybe 12months at least sony are very slow on products

Gordon,

You da man...this has made my day.....'grab hammer'.....now where's that piggy bank?

Unfortunately my local Sony Centre is about as helpful with information on their products as having a chocolate teapot!.

hey skywalker where are you from and what sony centre did u ask i work in the portsmouth 1 the promblem is sony are very hush hush about new realeases ive even called my the area rep manager about this tv and he didint even knew a realease date but knew of the set maybe we will hear sumthing national at easter or even the trade show at bristol at the weekend but i can promise the set wont go on sale at easter time

Its a fantastic looking piece of kit, but 70inch is just TOO big imo. I would guess that it would launch in the £6000-8000 range but a £3000-4000 50inch set would have me considering an upgrade.

What you really need is a specialist dealer with one of these set up properly in a stonking reference demo room....

Kourosh,

My local one is Southampton and I must admit they are terrible when it comes to technical facts etc. Same with the the guys at the Sony section in Harrods, all smartly dressed etc, but could not answer any remotely easy questions on how their products work.

I find this quite a lot popping into various stores, the staff are not clued up at all, how they ever manage to sell Plasmas with feeds from S Video looking cr@p is beyond me.

I suppose it is one of the real benefits of learning so much from this forum and others like it.....knowledge is power....mu..ha....haa :D

As for the Sony, perhaps they have something up their sleeve!.....Gordon knows his stuff.

Let's hope we are pleasantly surprised.....I will be first in the queue, hey you may even get a sale out of this

i tell u what skywalker as soon as i know i will let u know

Its already out in japan for about 1600.000 yen or about 8000 quid.

It is a nice set and has full HD specs (1920X1080) and as you pointed out, 2 HDMI ports.

There are other things coming out in the near future with the same specs but a lot cheaper. Ill probably wait for one of those.

By the time this set goes on sale in the UK at a realistic price we will be watching sky hidef & it's hard to see any set improving much on what i have now.
Maybe when holographic tv start's up it would be a good time to upgrade.

What do you have now then Steve?
Optoma RD50 : PC software DVD player for the R1 (NTSC) issue :Telewest:
V-stream Xpert DTV-DVB-T PCI card.

Went to my local Sony Center today - the guy there had no idea about SXRD or LCOS, but did come out with a snippet that Sony are going to introduce a range of DLP rear pros!

Just a quick update, I have seen information on the web that Europe WILL be getting this unit, with forums in Germany and France discussing it price is €12500 I have seen there.

There is a great thread discussing the SXRD 70" unit in the States, of course they are two or three months into having this unit and it is going down a storm.

I must add that a lot of the screenshots are HD cable feeds, so prepare to all cry like babies..............hopefully this will all change with Sky HD hits us next year or as some are suggesting later THIS year
