Might be a bit early to discuss (launch due this xmas) but who else here is considering the Sony PSP? Seems to be a pretty impressive hardware and likely to blow Nintendo out of the hand held market. Anyone know the suggested price at launch? Cheers. :smashin:

£300 has been banded about, but there is no confirmation.

It is out in Europe around Easter time.

I probably won't get it if it is £300. That seems a bit steep for a compacted PS2 to me, it doesn't really bring anything new to the table. The Nintendo DS is a bit different, but it also just seems like a bit of a gimmick having two screens, not to mention the fact that two screens will drain the battery!

I fear the PSP won't release many (or any) dedicated games, and will just re-release PS2 games on it.

surprised at the negative views so far, my money is on Sony dominating the hand held market within a year of launch. Of course the games wont be that innovative to start with but the UMD looks pretty robust and versatile.

i dont think it will unseat the SP. its to dammed big, battery life issues and if you want to buy a movie for it it will have to be on sonys own format. this could be a huge turkey if sony play it wrong. (like ther ipod clone :rotfl: )

the DS just looks like a big gimmick as has been said before above.
if i were to choose id have the PSP out of the 2, but if i were to go for any handheld then it would probably be a GBA SP, which dont have gimmicks just a decent all round mobile gaming machine and an unbeatable range of games by any platform i think going right back to the original gameboy.
the way i look at it is, the SP is about as far as id want to take gaming away from the home. who wants to play games on a 5 inch screen when they can sit in front of a projector?
especially given the launch cost of the PSP.

and the quotes above dont really say alot mate, as they all appear to be a bit vague and usual marketing talk.
i think all thats been said about every console ever launched by developers
    :)

Unlike the handheld competition up to this point Sony have software in their armory. Lots of it. Plus the ability to play movies. Techincally its far superior to the Nintendo offering and the games will be alot cheaper to manufacture because they are not solid state. This is what killed the cart part of the main console market - cost and technical limitations of the format.

But what you cant forget is that the bread and butter in hand held gaming is the kids. How many parents are going to be willing to fork out £300 plus cash for the games..........Its not really aimed at kids at that price and they are the main market. At that price it will certainly fail.

I definately fancy one though. I think Sony have come to understand that the main console market is going to get very tough for them from here on out so they have to diversify if they want to prosper.

Doesn’t really matter which you fancy unless you put your hand in your pocket and buy. I don’t know which of the two companies has the most reserve to get into a financial battle for the initial & ongoing loss should early adopters not hand over cash for the units, games and peripherals (Sony I expect). Personally, from past experience I’ve had too much trouble with Sony products to touch anything from them newly developed for my own use. The product quality itself (not the build & reliability) will have little to do with the overall success – if this was an overriding issue to many in the market place we would all be using Betamax tapes instead of VHS, Apple Mac’s would outsell PC’s……add to list as there are many examples of poorer products taking market dominance. Personally, the DS will fit right in with what I consider a beneficial advantage to me. Its strategic position within the Nintendo product line-up also makes sense from my viewpoint. With my current GBA SP I could already use it as a camera, MP3 player, radio, watch copies of my favourite DVD’s and play games. But I bought it for, and only use it for games (although I quite fancy the movie player). But in the end what it does best is play games and 3rd party developers have produced all the other bolt-on’s. I feel the more focused product is the DS & given the compatibility with current GBA games will ensure a good level of early sales.

They'll both be blown away when MS releases its handheld mobile phone gaming machine in the near future, as it rumoured.

Oh you mean like the XBOX has blown away the PS2 then?

I think Nokia has found out rather badly people are not ready to spend money on a phone/handheld yet, not sure why maybe because they dont wanna be seen holding there Portable console to there ear? godknows

    :)

the power of any of the handheld consoles will not be the deciding factor it will be the games and cost which will determine the winner

Interesting points, personally I think Nintendo are throwing everything to try and make sure that they are not pushed outside the handheld market which is their only real stronghold left. From what I've seen so far the PSP shows more promise and I like the design better but this is way too early to dismiss either machine.

Also somone I think said it is too big :rotfl: - I'd rather have a decent size screen than less than 3 inches lol :smashin:

The thing I have found with handhelds is they look good and sound great but I never end up using them much, the GBA SP is a fantastic machine with some outstanding games but I ended up selling mine because my favourite games (strategy and RPGs) were better suited to the GB player IMHO and I'd rather play them on a big screen.

If I do buy the PSP or the DS I certainly won't be wiiling to pay more than £150 for either of them.

Dean, that is the rendered picture, and not the actual PSP.

Also I heard that the PSP has two 333mhz processors, one for gaming, the other for multimedia.

I never believe sweeping 'marketing statements' from executives (who usually have their own agenda) and the like lol, from any company. As far as I know, none of these people are able to 'see' the future, jst how 'they' would like to see the future lol :lesson:

True, those are concept pics but it is confirmed that the final PSP will look extremely close to the concept as most of the last minute changes are to take place internally - so it looks a bit sexy in my book.

Have you not seen the actual PSP then? It looks similar, but no way near as sexy as the renders look.
