After three calls to the Sony Helpline and two trips to a Sony shop, I finally got my NW-HD3 to work. I am now very happy with it and glad that I didn't go and swop it for an iPod (that was the next step!)

Just wondering if anyone can tell me how the unit switches itself off? And after how long of not being used?

I can't find anything obvious in the manual and don't want to be caught short with no battery when I need it most.

    Ta in advance.

When i stop the track or stop pressing any of the buttons it turns itself off after approx 25 seconds (i.e screen goes blank).

I am very happy with the player as the sound is much sharper than with my previous player, Sony MD. Plus the remote control from the MD works with the NW-HD3.

Just hold down the menu button to turn the unit off.

Thinking of buying one of these.

What is the sound like? (volume wise.)
Also is the headset any good?

Volume wise, it's pretty quiet but usable. Buy something isolated and efficient (Shure E2c for example) to make the most of it.

User interface interface is somewhat cumbersome compared to iPod, although it's better with the RM-MC40ELK remote. (and it should be, since with that it'll be the most expensive 20Gb player on the market by quite a margin). The software is easy to use to load music onto, but in terms of the ultimate usability of the features and how it's thought out, it blows.

Im using the RM-MC11EL remote. Im after the RM-MC40ELK but the only place i have seen it for sale is on E-bay from someone in China and two places in the USA that will del to the UK. However, both charge approx £50. A bit too much for me.

Update on Seme.co.uk I rang them today they have the remote from the MZNH1 minidisc which is compatible but the guy on the phone sheepishly told me that the price was £60.
I am going to write to sony to see if they have any plans to release the remote as a general accesory, any other NW-HD3 owner you may want to do the same see if they listen to sense a bit quicker than over the mp3 issue.

I e-mailled Sony but all they said was I could buy a replacement remote (i.e the one for the MD) but they didn't answer my query about if they were going to have the RM-MC40ELK for sale in the U.K.

That was nearly 2 months ago. It may be worth contacting again. They may be thinking about changing their minds if the sales for NW-HD1 & NW-HD3 are going well.

I asked Sony the same question about whether the remote would be available for sale in the UK. I also mentioned that my local Sony Centre could supply the remote for £75 and questioned the ridiculous price. I got this reply today:

With regards to the in-line remote, this is a replacement spare part and is not a standard sales accessory. By way of explanation, the cost of this remote control will reflect the expenses to produce the parts in relatively small quantities, the additional costs incurred for procurement and warehousing of small numbers. This remote will also be available from SEME.

Buy it from audiocubes.com. Search for RM-MC40ELK. The RM-MC40ELK compatibility is one of the saving graces of the HD3 IMO.

I was tempted to buy from audiocubes but it still works out to approx £50. Also Im wary of purchasing from companies abroad.

Has anyone ordered this or any other item from audiocubes.com ? Would you order again ?

    Cheers

They're good and definitely better than the ebay gamble (although you can obviously snag a deal most of the time without problems). They do tend to be quite steep compared to how much you can buy these for in Japan.

Just got myself the RM-MC40ELK remote - what a waste of time! - Better to get yourself the NWCASE04 (Sturdy carry case) from empiredirect.co.uk for only £15 and press the buttons yourself.

I keep opn getting strangled by the amounts of damn cable that I seem to be carrying around!!

Finaly got a reply from Sony, same old bull****, its a replacement spare part, cost of single item blah, blah , blah. Got one of ebay for £44 including shipping.
    Here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15062&item=5746594541&rd=1

    3 day delivery from Japan

First impression of the remote pretty small, displays 10 character per line controls all functions only issue is working it out with japanese instructions.

Try the Sony MDXR71 for about £30 or even better the Shure E2c (£60) or E3c (£130). You can get the Shure's on eBay for £45 and £75ish respectively.

Look on the headphone forum for in depth info and reviews.

Anyone know if there are any accessories or cases for the NW HD3? There are a million for iPod but can't find any for the Sony. The black felt case it comes with is useless. I need something that covers it yet still can use the buttons and see the screen.

Hi, yes there is a case, although I haven't used it, it was made for the HD1, but apparently is good for the HD3 too. Its code is NWCASE04. If you do a search for it there are a couple of online retailers. I saw it for 11.99 the other day, and someone was selling it on ebay for 15 (which is the RRP) I'm hoping that Sony will bring out some proper accessories, specifically for the HD3, soon!
