Sony MXD-D40 Recording Questions

Novice Member
Hi, I just bought a Sony MXD-D40 CD to Minidisc Recording Deck and am waiting for it to arrive. I have a few questions for those who may know.

1. With digital files (FLAC, AAC, WAV, etc) coming from a computer, is it better quality wise to record those on minidisc by playing them on the computer and recording in real time with an optical cable to the deck or is it better to burn the files to CD-R or RW then use the CD to Minidisc record on the deck? I am wondering if the CD approach helps to eliminate possible computer noise that may end up in the recording if an optical approach is used.

2. Would I be better off to set the recording audio level manually or let the deck handle that? Which gives better recordings usually?

Thanks for your help!
