    TV: Sony 28LS35.
Whilst watching a pre-recorded VHS video the picture format kept switching from SMART to WIDE periodically and then back again.
So I changed the TV's 'Auto Formatting' to OFF thinking that this would cure it but it didn't.

    Is this correct behaviour?
Can someone explain why it does this with some pre-recorded videos?

    cheers for any help,

    John

    No, it's not correct behaviour.

When you turn off the auto formatting, wait for it to switch to Wide and then, while it is still in Wide mode, change the mode manually to Smart. Alternatively, just stick an anamorphic widescreen DVD in and change it to Smart on that. Then try the VHS tape again. This might fix the problem.

Alternatively, there might just be a problem with some of the tapes whereby something is being interpreted as the widescreen switching signal. Or it could be an incompatibility with your VCR and the LS35. Or a problem with the Scart socket on the LS35, so try another Scart socket. Or it might be a more serious fault with the LS35.
