A set may be marked HDTV compatible and it means it is capable of displaying a HD image. The problem comes when you look at where the source of your HD image may come from. HD broadcasts in the UK from SKY will be output via HDMI and this means your TV must have a HDMI input or a DVI input that supports HDCP protocol. It is probable that future HD DVD players will incorporate this technology as program producers demand protection of their material.

thanks jim for your reply...one other question if you don't mind my ignorance on this matter..if this set is capable of displaying a HD image, where would that source come from if this set doesn't have the HDMI or DVI inputs.

Possibly via component ( then it's analogue not digital ) and a DVD player that can upscale? Not sure really!

You can get HD via the component inputs, sasy from a D-VHS player or future HD DVD player (assuming they come with component inputs)

The Sony you are looking at is incapable of displaying HDTV broadcasts. Proper High Definition broadcasts can only be input via DVI or HDMI inputs.

If the set has component inputs it is possible that it can display High Def inputs from some DVD players.

Sorry, domtheone, we just answered the same question at the same time!
