Not sure how accurate that in-store price is, since the V series version is £2200-2300. The S series has VGA in for PC hook-up, but doesn't have the WEGA engine to improve the image quality - some say they see no real improvement, others swear by it. Seems it's a very subjective point, or depends on how critical your eye is.
That said, I'd opt for the V version, which £1800 or so buys you online via pricerunner as well.
Read the Sony threads here and you'll get some idea as to whether you're convinced by the arguments pro and con of the WEGA inclusion on the V series.

the wega engine would be good, as ive seen the effects, does this not have it?

KDL-S40A12 has PC input (VGA) and slightly louder speakers over the KDL-V40A12 but the KDL-V40A12 has WEGA Engine where as the KDL-S40A12U does not.

Should have our KDL-S40A12U and RDR-HXD710 sometime this week to setup.

Kind of related but does anyone know if the KDLS40A12U can handle the 525p/625p progressive scan output from the RDR-HXD710 ?

Also what HD modes does the KDL-S40A12U support ? I found no real info on what HD modes the KDL-S40A12U supports. I know that HD Ready means 720p which the KDL-S40A12U supports but how about the lower progressive modes 480p/525p/625p/576P and 1080i ?
