I have been looking at the Sony KDL37V4500 and KDL32V4500,
since they are in promotion at the Sony center.

I have read on this forum that the 37 inch version uses a different
panel than the 32 inch one. What would I be losing when I go
    for the former?

In what way is the panel worse?
    - colours?
    - contrast?
    - blacks?
    - viewing angle?

I could also go for the 40V4000/40W4000 to get the better panel,
what would I lose compared to the 37v4500? (There is no 40V4500
listed). The 40W4500 is way more expensive, so is out of
    the question.

Note I will be using the tv for watching analogue cable and with a
    htpc.

Here are the prices from the sale:
    KDL-32V4500: € 699
    KDL-32W4000: € 899
    KDL-37V4500: € 899
    KDL-40V4000: € 1049
    KDL-40W4000: € 1049

I am going crazy trying to decide, any help would be great :)

I am from Belgium, not the cheapest country around I guess. The 37V4500 came from 1200 euro (promo 900 euro).

I went to the sony center today to have a look at these tvs myself. I could see a very slight difference in the blacks between 37V4500 and 32V4500 when looking at them from a big angle, but nothing to worry about.

I also asked to see analogue cable on the sets and was amazed at how good the sony 37V4500 handled that.

I would get a free DVD recorder with the 37V4500 as well.
I think I'm going to go with the 37V4500 after all.

I know about redcoon, they tend to be very cheap. My girlfriend objects to buying a TV from an online retailer though. I must admit I am a bit wary too to buy something that expensive through an online retailer.

    Prices at redcoon
    37V4500: 760 euro
    40V4000: 742 euro

Nothing listed for 40Wxxxx at redcoon, I found 46W4000 for 1170 euro,
46 inch is however too big.

I looked for prices elsewhere too and redcoon seems to be the cheapest.

PS: the GAF (Girlfriend Acceptance Factor) makes it even harder to buy a LCD tv :)

hmm but why to pay more for MSRP?You could get a blu ray player with the extra or some bd movies to accompany your new HD TV'S.And redcoon is one of the biggest eu online retailers,so I dont think there is much of a worry.

Ok, I made up my mind. I am going to with the 37V4500.
I am going to get it from the sony center, considering the free DVD recorder the price difference with redcoon is not that big.

@chrisgeo: thanks for the moral support :)

I have finally setup my TV (KDL35V4500) in the new apartment. I only played with it for half an hour though. I hooked up my old xbox running xbmc via component scart. The picture looked great. Colors and black were very good. The only issue is the limited viewing angle, when the viewing angle increases the blacks get worse quickly, the rest of the colors stay at an acceptable level up to a very big angle.

This should not be a big problem because my normal viewing position will be in front of the tv :)
I also did not notice and back light bleeding. I stared at the TV for a while when it did not have a signal, just showing a black screen, and the entire screen was uniformly black.

Conclusion so far: awesome TV, only downside is viewing angle, which I think is better on the 32" and 40" panels.

BTW: viewing distance was 250cm, default settings were used. I am going to try out the recommended settings when I get the time, see if this improves the blacks when viewing it from an angle.
