How can this be a great deal if you don't even know what you will be buying? Past performance is no indication of how good the new models may or may not be, and there have been a lot of unhappy 46" Sony LCD customers recently. If the dealer can offer you this price now, he will be able to offer you this price when the sets are actually in store. Hang fire, keep hold of your money and make an informed decision when you know what you will be buying.

the only actual worry might be the price,if thats gonna be the MSRP then the online price will be much cheaper when stock arrives.the same happens every year, the first prices are near MSRP and after a few weeks online there is serious price difference.

Hi, thanks for the replies! :)

We had decided to buy the 46w4500, but as you know it is near impossible to get hold of one!

The sales person had a listing for the 5500, but no price, so he went to another room to find out. When he came back he could not believe the price himself! So he confirmed it with his boss.

Obviously no money will change hands until the set is here, but having never seen it is a concern.

We are going back to the shop next Saturday, see if I can get more info.
We're also going to be getting an av-receiver, BD player, the whole lot, so might get a good discount...

    Thanks again!

this article is not at all indicative of the european 2009 line up.Its based upon the sets announced at CES 2009 which though are clearly different and inferior to what we will get as a 2009 line up

Hello to all of the 5500 watchers :hiya:

A little updated info from a european site Heimhifi.

46 "Full HD, Motion Flow +100 Hz, integrated HDTV DVB-T & DVB-C tuner, DLNA and USB Photo, Music, Video, Dynamic Contrast: 80.000:1, Bravia Eng 3, Bravia Sync 09, 4xHDMI, 24P, Rotatable stand

They are advising delivery from the first of March 2009

How dependable this information is I couldn't say but with no info from sony yet that I can find and with an expected release date very soon its the best I could do.

no photos as yet but If I find some will post.

PS I hope theres no clouding.

pictures & specification now available on Dutch Sony website:

    http://www.sony.nl/product/t32-w-series/kdl-40w5500

Looks a lot like the V-series in the USA (European W-series has better specs though).

The only step backwards when comparing the spec seems to be 10 bit panel on the 4500 and an 8 bit panel on the 5500 will this matter, I don't understand the differences to the human eye.

There is a little information out there about the 8 bit v 10 bit heres a link talking about the differences

    10-bit vs 8-bit Display Panels

I also think that source needs to be 10 bit to really appreciate this but am not sure maybe someone else could advise?

UPDATE. This info from another source.

    "its simple really

I have worked in the electronics feild specifically with tv for the pst 5 years and now more than ever this question is popping up. The simple answer is as of now it makes little to no difference if you have a 10 bit or 8 bit lcd. The reason is because there is no 10 bit source out there to feed this 10 bit panel, and when u send 8 bit to a 10 bit tv the tv has to do more processing which everyone knows more thinking done by the tv means a lower quality picture. With blu-ray now being the last form of mechanical source other then gaming there will be no source out there in the future either, the next generation of movies and such will be internet based and downloadable content, with compression rates of 13-1 and getting bigger online there is no need for 10 bit and satelite and cable company's have said they will not increase there bandwith wich means they cannot fit a 10 bit signal. You may also notice the biggest player in lcd Samsung has gone with an 8 bit panel in all of their new tvs and i can tell you i have seen a 8 bit samsung next to a 10 bit sony xbr on a panel comparison using an HQV disc and there is no real difference samsungs processing makes up the difference in colour recreation. So dont get caught up in the numbers game just see if you like the picture"

Two advantages of the W5500 over the W4500 that nobody has mentioend yet are:

    1. the improved DLNA. You will be able to access video files, as opposed to only pictures and music in the existing model.

    2. The "AppliCast" feature that would allows online features on the Sony W5500 without a PC. Apparently these “widgets” can be displayed while watching any content, with features such as Alarm, World Clock, Picture Frame Online. The description by Sony sounds pretty lame, but who knows? we might be getting some neat applications. Does any body has more info on this?

Oh, and the W5500 it has the new Bravia Engine 3, but this is probably irrelevant (I have never seen a proper comparision of how they have improved over time). The only thing we know for sure is that the "pro" engine is better than the normal one.

If you consider finally that the 8-bit vs. 10-bit discussion is a pretty sterile one ('cause there is no 10-bit content available and the real life difference seems to be marginal, at best), choosing the new model over the old one seems like a no brainer.

Or don't buy anything yet, keep you money under the matress (in case the bank fails), and keep enjoying the forum discussions while you wait to buy it for much less in a few months... :rotfl:

As mars has already mentioned, I got mine from directtvs.co.uk :D

i have dealt with them before for a few laptops for work and have had no problems at all - their laptop site is well recommended.

I spoke to them a couple of days ago re delivery and was still quoted early-mid march so unless anything drastic has happened recently I am still hoping! :lease:
