Sent the wife into look at one today at the local Sony centre, Thumbs up, oh joy  .

The question she had a demonstration with a DVD then asked to see just normal TV. She was pleased with this, then was told by one of the staff that what she had seen had gone through a recorder that imroves the signal and sends it out in HD format. When it was switched to normal TV the wife said the difference was very noticable. What is it that the centre used? The wife seems to think its a dvd recorder but wasnt sure. I know you can get dvd players that can upgade the signal from normal dvd's to an HD signal. This HD buisness is all new to me.

Any way the important thing is she likes it now its down to funds, as usual lol

    Cheers

P.S. They also said that after Xmas the TVs will not be coming with stands, that would be an extra. Whether i believe that or not i dont know.

I stand to be corrected, but I don't know of an upscaling DVD-R.

Dare I suggest that the sales assistant didn't really know what he was on about?

I've seen the 50a12 running both from a standard DVD player and it's own internal tuner - the difference was indeed noticable, but I wouldn't say that the off-air picture was too bad.

the dvd player being used its the new rdr-910 it has 250gb hard drive, freeview and a up scaler(through hdmi) you can watch freeview through the hdmi socket, and trust me it makes the picture alot better not to sure if its upscaling it but the freeview chann looks far better through the player(hdmi) than the same channel on the freeview on the set(we aint all thick at sony centres ;) )

kourosh - Can I get one of these in Northern Ireland? I checked the Sony Centre online but the only one there is a 42" version which I know little or nothing about. Is the 42" version the same spec as the 50" How much is the 42" version? Must go and check again, thanks.

    I consider myself corrected. ;)

BTW it was not my intention to suggest that anyone was thick, merely that they might not be in full possesion of the facts...a bit like me with the upscaling DVD-R! :D

Thanks Kourosh, that is a very decent price. 42" Is still pretty big for my wee room :)

Is it definately HD Ready? The details on the Sony Centre website are a little vague. Does it have HDMI? I would seriously consider this set if it does.

    Thanks Kourosh :smashin:

its defin hidef ready,i would say the picture should be sightly better than the 50" cause smaller screens tend to be a little sharper

Yeah, I got that e-mail too. Phoned them straight away, only to be told that it was a "glitch" in thier system and they didn't have any at all - worst still they didn't know when they would be getting any :(

Edit: Just spoke to John Lewis in Southsea and they said that they are expecting stock (at the warehouse) on 26th November :)
