According to rumours from France, Sony will introduce the HW55ES at IFA 2013 in Berlin, on the 4th September.

Rumoured upgrades:

Fully motorised optics, with lens memory (perhaps Sony will add the auto detection of 2.35:1 content and 16:9 content found in Panasonic projectors?) - this seems very likely, considering the competing projectors to the HW50 have this.

Wireless HDMI - similar to the Epson TW9100W - allowing HDMI devices to connect wirelessly to the projector - quite likely - would give it an edge over JVC and Panasonic

Sony VW95ES chassis - this seems likely as the current chassis has been in use for a few years now and it's time for a refresh

Reality creation - this seems almost 100% likely as Panasonic and JVC projectors have similar features

1080p SRXD panels - this is 99% guaranteed as this is what Sony uses in their projectors (and will for the foreseeable future as far as I can see).

So will you be waiting and buying one of these, or are you going to get the HW50ES straight away, or something entirely different all together?

Sony excites me this year. They are calling this the hw55 but in reality, it's looking more like a vw95 and adding the best bits of the hw50 such as higher lumens and reality creation.
The hw50 is £3k and the vw95 is £5k (recently reduced to £4k) so the price of the hw55 will be interesting. If they can still keep it around the £3k mark then it will be a formidable proposition and JVC, Epson, Panasonic etc will really need to up their game to stop Sony increasing their sales - and hopefully they will all be ringing up some major improvements too

The only thing that might have to drop from the vw95 chassis is the superior lens and there is a good chance that will happen to meet a cheaper price point. Hopefully not but we'll have to wait and see.

Don't forget about Optoma either. Their HD91 could very be a game changer. Single chip DLP with no rainbow artifacts due to its new light source and 20k hours with very little change in output over time - that's a mouth watering proposition. Put a good lens on it and it could be one of the sharpest and cleanest looking pictures around at reasonable money. Similar projectors are at £15-£20k at the minute.
