Sony HS50 Dsub vs HDMI

Ok, got a rig that I can connect to my sony HS50 projector via Dsub (normal monitor cable) or a DVI-D to HDMI cable.

Which would give the best picture?

If your rig is a HTPC the the VGA will be best. The HDMI input on the HS50 suffers from cropping\overscan. VGA will allow 1:1 - I have compared the two inputs and trust me - the VGA is better.
