does any one know if my recordings from a sony hi 8 camcorder will play in a digital camcorder so i could use the fire weire to get the film onto pc
thanks

Yes! Some, but only some of the Sony Digital8 camcorders can play the analogue 8mm/Hi8 tapes. You will then be able to capture the footage on your PC via firewire.
I would suggest you take an old tape to your local Jessops and try it. If you find a cam you like then find the best web price and as long as you have the sites details they will match the web price for you.

now to find a friend with one thats willing to lend it to me.

I had temporary use of the Sony TRV33 . I managed to record stuff from my Sony Hi8 camera via it's analogue inputs incl SVHS onto mini tapes. Then firewired it across onto my PC and finally onto a DVD.

As long as the new digital camera has analogue inputs and specifically SVHS connection then it should be fine.
