Have had a HD5 for about a week now and have ripped about 15 (original) CD's using ATRACPlus 256k (er..then lost the USB lead so haven't done any more until I find a replacement :thumbsdow).

Here's the problem- most tracks have an occasional crackle/pop audible during quiet sections- it is the same as the pop you get just after fast-forward. I have played through different headphones and through my amp and the problem is always there.

This is my first time with ATRAC- is this normal or could there be a problem with my SS 3.1 or CD drive etc?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Sorry...didn't mention this. The tracks sound the same on my PC as they do on the HD5, with all the popping in the same places.

Has anyone else found this problem?

    Cheers,
    Dave

sounds like your PC doesnt like encoding music.
Id probably try ripping ATRACS while your NOT using the PC and make sure that isnt ruining it (happened to me before on slower PC)

I now seem to have solved this problem by selecting this Tools/Options setting:

CD Drive Settings/CD Importing/Use smoothing when importing CD

Other than eliminationg the 'pops' this does not seem to effect the sound quality.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Dave_RAM - if you think this has solved the problem, can you post the problem and solution in this thread then it will be a handy hint for anyone else who may have the problem and you will be in one of the FAQ threads :)
If you post it as a "if you are experiencing pops/crackles then try this" sort of thing it would be helpful.

The problem might also be with the CD. Dust etc.
