I've just bought one of these off the classifieds but it won't format dvd-rw discs. I just get "c13 disc is dirty".

    I'm using TDK 4x -rw's. Seems fine with -r's.

Can anyone help or is it the machine that is faulty?

Use 1x or 2x discs only.

    Thanks for that.

Why would it record onto x8 dvd-r's but not x4 -rw's?

Also, are 1x or 2x -rw's still available?

For the time being. It isn't just your Sony that has this issue. Only a handful of current DVD-RW recorders are 4x DVD-RW compatible.

4x DVD-RW is Version 1.2 of the format whereas 2x media is Version 1.1. DVD-R (4x to 8x speed) is all included in Version 2.0 (Revisions 1 and 2 respectively) of that format thus will work on a compatible machine assuming suitable firmware/media.

    Thanks again.

Guess if I had looked in the manual and the disc case I would have found that out :D

No - not at all - although the likelihood of them failing or corrupting the data increases as the media gets older. They have a lifespan of upto 1000 times although, as with any optical media, this is a rough guideline and real lifespan may be significantly less.
