You can't go wrong with Sony. I ordered NS78HB recently eagerly waiting for delivery on Monday.

For most people these will be stop-gaps.

The Pioneer DV600 may have a better spec, but in all honesty how many people will want or even take advantage of all of these features

I paid £67 for my Sony NS78H which isn't a bad price for what seems to be a decent machine. Paying £50 to £60 more for the Pioneer seems a bit steep especially when many will be intending to upgrade to some sort of HD DVD player in the near future when things settle down.

The Pioneers to me also seem to lack in decent build quality.

    Hello J80FAB.

My thoughts exactly - if the NS78 is anything like the NS76 which was purchased for my friend from Paul Taylor in Peterborough (don't know WHY I didn't get one too) it will more than do the job until the HDDVD vs Blu-ray debarcle is over - I am given to believe that Blu-ray will win from the research I have done.

The NS78 doesn't have an optical digital output though. Incidentally, what is the picture quality like from the 78? Anyone please??

Picked up a Sony DVP-NS78HB yesterday. Couldn't be happier. I can't comment on the Samsung DVD-1080P7 but judging from the reviews I've read, I wouldn't go for it.

(note that mine is the silver version, so 78H only)

    Sony over samsung anyday.

But the pioneer works perfectly. And no need to burn files to CD.

I was thinking of getting either the Sony NS78 or the Panasonic DVD S53.

Do you think the Sony would be best?

Personally id go for the Sony simply because its the sexiest, take a look at how sexy the Sony DVP-NS78HB is compared to the Samsung DVD-1080P7, the samsung does have a glossy finish to the front of it but usually that means you cant see any text when the suns shining! If looks meant nothing or the dvd player was hidden in an old fashioned tv cabinet then id STILL go for the sony, for the performance, picture quality, sound quality and reputation. I do prefer pioneer over sony for quality but thats not what your asking.

    So to sum up...SONY!
