I wouldn't buy NOW a DVD camcorder! It's still an "unripe" product.
Compared with MiniDV camcorders it lacks in storage facility and is also lower in quality (mpeg2).
DVD cameras support smaller discs (8cm.) ONLY 1.4 Gb . This means that you can record in HIGH QUALITY ONLY 18 minutes of footage.

I don't know UK market well (I am from Italy) but it seems that all prosumer cameras with 3 ccds are over your budget except ONE : Panasonic NV GS70 that should be more or less around 700£. I suggest you test it for lowlight performance.... I've heard some rumors about this....

More pricey are Pana MX500/ Sony TRV 950, and at the top of the list, Canon XM2 and Sony VX2000 (around 2.500 Euro): THE BEST!
