We have a sony dcr hc96e must be about 5 years old and were having problems with transferring the footage from the camcorder to DVD recorder the picture is breaking up whilst watching have tried it with the 3 cables white, red and yellow through the TV and picture is still broken up. Would it be the cradle thats playing up as we can watch playback on the camcorder and its fine!

Looks like a SD Mini DV camcorder.

DCR-HC96E (DCRHC96E, DCRHC96E.CEH) : Cameras & camcorders : Sony.

Appears to have DV in (very handy for digitising analogue video for converting to DVD).

To get the full quality of the digital recordings the footage needs to be transferred to a computer with a firewire (IEE1394) port. Then edited on a PC and burnt to DVD using a standard computer DVD burner.

The best videl connection available for direct copying to a DVD recorder is s-video.

If you are getting break up, it may be the head is clogged and is not playing the tape back correctly. There are also issues with some older tapes where the oxide is flaking off the backing. More a problem with DAT tapes, but Mini DV is affected as well.

Try a head cleaning tape.

FYI, some DVD recorders have a firewire input. We have an old Liteon that has. Very useful for backing up DV tapes.

yes using an IEE1394 lead strait to a DVD recorder if it has a digital input will give as good quality as to a pc but its more difficult to edit, try playing the footage strait in a tv to see the quality if it has lots of drop outs etc before any transfer,if it does not and a head cleaner wont cure it the heads may be gone.

Resolved thanks guys panic over I had the camcorder to near the flat screen TV and was scrambling the picture moved the camcorder and its all good.

Been trying to resolve this for ages and was contemplating on getting another camcorder or DVD recorder the Philips DVD recorder we have has stopped recording on the DV i link cable so have to use the AV yellow white and red. Don't know if the DV connection is better? but it records OK now.
