As Sony can't be said to be the cheapest act in town, can anyone suggest a better Home Cinema system for the same cash as this system (£460 Multi-Region)?

    Thanks.

Pioneer Dcs303 has got good reviews in most mags and it costs £349 from dvdmagic.net(inc delivery). I ordered an very expensive Pioneer ns-dv1000 from them, delivered when requested and no problems with it so far. Very happy customer.

Staff are very nice and knowledgable

It doesn't have the looks of the sony which i was considering buying, but i steered clear of the davs550 as there were lots of problems with it (although i think they're now fixed). I 've also heard that the subwoofer on the sony is poor.

    Thanks

    Bruno

The Pioneer gets good reviews as stated as does many of the JVC range. I ordered the Sony after hearing it side by side with the Pioneer and I preferred it, but it is very subjective - I recommend getting to a decent listening room and trying them out.

Mine arrived at the weekend and I am extremely happy with it, bass 'n all.

How would you know, in advance, if a machine has the
bad firmware or the "good" firmware? Even the "good" firmware
has some problems (flicker/bounce of screen on starting disk and
reportedly on layer change of some disks).

People are having immense difficulty getting Sony to admit to the
firmware problem and/or fix it. I've been corresponding with a
poor soul in Germany who is stuck with an 880 and bad
firmware. I'm in Hong Kong and had the same problem (though
Sony Hong Kong, to their credit, did fix the firmware).

Seems like there's some quality issues with this machine
as well, Sony repair has parts on backorder.

It might all work itself out by spring...

It is a really good looking piece of gear, though.

My 2 cents - Get a good dealer and ask them. Or go to an old fashioned shop - you know the sort where you can see the product before you buy it :)

Krish AV spent time going through the known issues with me and assuring me that they had been fixed. They also have a good record on after sales on this forum. I could have got the DAVS550 £20 cheaper elsewhere but would rather some security that I have some support should anything go wrong.

Remember that the nature of these forums is that you are more likely to hear from people having problems and trying to sort them than from people who are happily getting on and enjoying their system. I bet there are thousands of happy DAV owners for each one here who has an issue.

For the record I have component out to my plasma and the picture is stunning. The sound is great and the unit gets the wife's approval.
