I just bought a davs-550 from Richer sounds. It was claimed to be a multi-region model but I just noticed it has the Region 2 symbol on the back of the machine. Short of buying and trying a DVD from another region, how can I tell if it truly is multi-region?

I would guess the symbol is put on by Sony - they are R2 when they leave the factory and chipped to make them MR.

A quick call to RS customer services people should clear things up. If it doesn't, don't worry too much about buying a multi region DVD - If RS sold you a Multi Region player that's incapable of playing Multi Region disks, then you can get your money back / new player under the sale of goods act.

Don't worry about the symbol on the back, just try out some
other region disks. Also - ENSURE you don't have the
subtitles bug - search for dav-s550 in this forum for instructions
    on that.

...and make sure it plays an RCE disk like the Region 1 of Spiderman
