    Hi all,
I am considering buying an all in one AV system and have been looking at the SONY DAV-SC8. Does anyone have any comments on this system, is it worth the dosh or would you reccommend an alternative ??
    Many thanks,

    Hi

I have the Davs 550 which is basically the SC5 but without scart. As for the SC8, i dont think it has much more to offer than the SC5 or 6 but it does look the part and i just love sony styling! So go for it!

Another DAV fan here - I have the DAVC 770 (a DAVS550 with multi-disc changer).

    Can't knock it.

Cool, forgive my ignorance but does this also include progressive scan or do all component conenctions have that? I think i might have to invest in the davsc8 then. Only trouble is i have no space to put the speakers on the floor. Need wall mounted ones realy. Can u detach the stands big10uk?

Stands can't be detacted, but you can raise the hight of the speaker...

About the progressice scan?, i dont know really, I only brought this one becuase I couldn't get the DAV-SC888.

But am glad I got it, as it is better and has more sound features like Dolby Pro Logic 2.

Cheers for the response, but this is what i dont understand. Some sites say it does have component:

    http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetails/index.asp?modelcode=SON-DAVSC8

    http://www.digitaldirectuk.com/products_moreinfo3/index.asp?product_id=1911

    http://www.homecinemaheaven.com/prod_info/dvdsys/davsc8.htm

    http://www.rgbdirect.co.uk/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=2056&ReferrerCode=1

.....and many more. Doesnt say nothing about component on sonys website, but then again their site is useless.

I did find a picture of the back of it once but cant remember where, arrrgh!

If it does have component then it's the system for me. Was looking at the Panasonic SCHT900 but prefer the look of the Sony, but do want the component out to go with my soon to be arriving (hopefully) 42" plasma.

Can anyone with the system have a look at the back and let us know.

    Cheers

Ive found the web page with the pic of the back of the unit.

    http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/1588

There is a thumb nail image about half way down, click on it to enlarge.

Now im far from an expert, but from what i think a componet input looks like, it doesnt look like it has one. Is this the same as the back of yours big10uk? Do you use the component input?

    fulllupo,

That picture confirms that it doesn't have component.

Component are a set of 3 inputs, where it consists of green/blue/red.

An example is this one - http://www.avland.co.uk/denon/dvd2900/index.htm - click on the nearly at the bottom, the rear panel thumb nail.

I've just bought a DAV-SA30 (Sony's runt of the litter!) and I think the sound and picture quality are amazing, so I'm sure an SC8 will rock!

I got it fo £253 at Comet online and have just managed to get it multi region with my Oneforall :)

The Dav-SC8 DOES have componant output according to the manual... It tells you to select 'Progressive; in 'Screen Setup' the signal is only output from the Componant Output jacks. (as opposed to S-Video I assume, doesn't seem to have a Scart according to the pics in the manual, that would mean no RGB?)

It shows you how to connect component (Y, Pb/Cb, Pr/Cr) ?? to a TV accepting this input.

PS. The picture on SuperFi's website seems to be for the back of the DAV-SC5 and not the SC8 as there are some extra connectors where the grill is under Video 2 on the SC8, these seem to be the componant connectors.

Hope this info helps :) Let me know if you need more info from the manual.

Had a look at the back of one of a SCV8 in John Lewis and it definitely did not have any component terminals, just the RGB Scart. Fabulous looking system though

If i am correct the SC models have rgb scart not compnent the DAV-S systems had component instead which was better if you could make use of it (i can't) so really scart was the better choice

my sc8 does not have a scart but does have RGB. I bought it in Hong Kong - thats why there may be a difference on some machines. its great though - big difference over sc5 is the active subwoofer

    Dear guys,

For your information, the speaker stand can be detached from the speaker itself and the speaker can be wall mounted with the optional accessory model coded WS-DAV1.

As far as the Sony SC8 and Pana HT900 are concerned, the SC8 sounds better but it comes with a higher price tag.

I personally find the sub not "kick" enough for some movies so I added another powered sub to bring the bass up.

I have the Sony sub set to movie mode all the time as I think it sounds better with both movie and music.

    Enjoy your SC8.

    Regards,
    Will.
