I have just recently bought the Xbox elite and have just found out the SonyDA1200ES does not support sound through HDMI. How do I now get the sound back from the TV into the AMP? What leads do I need? Basic question but im useless! Also whats the point in having HDMI in and out through the amp if theres no sound?

couldnt you just use the optical lead/adaptor that comes in the box, with the elite, and connect an optical cable from 360 to the amp.
if you take the sound from the tv,its only going to be stereo.

well, the da1200es is an entry level av amp, its hdmi ports are really only there for video switching. the onkyo 505, the cheapes of the xx5 range, doesnt do audio through hdmi either.

to answer your second question, not sure. does your tv have an spdif output socket on the back? you could try hooking that up to the amp to see if the tv will pass audio from hdmi to spdif. or can you hook up the usual av lead along with the hdmi lead to the elite at the same time? you could use a 360 lead with an spdif output and hook that up to the amp instead.

if you cant do either of those.......your stuffed lol

You would think the sensible thing to do would be to use the HDMI from the xbox to the TV and then the supplied audio leads from the Xbox to the Amp but for some reason the xbox has been designed so that the HDMI lead and the audio do not fit intothe machine at the same time. What if i use a scart to phono audio out from my TV to amp or will this just give stereo sound.

thats not true.
the 360 elite, can utilise the hdmi and the optical audio out,and the left(white)/right(red) analogue audio out at the same time.
there is a dummy lead in the box-just like the head of the component connector, and it ends in a red/white phono, and optical out, mini box.

you simply connect the hdmi to the console, and connect the audio block in also, then connect the optical to end of the mini box,and then into the amp/receiver.
the audio block fits in quite nicely right above the hdmi cable.

you will need to buy an optical cable:

thats a 2 metre one,you can get 1 metre if its too long.
