Hi there, as thread title. A couple of days ago they were in stock everywhere, now there seems to be a drout and can't find one anywhere with lead times around mid-late february.

Anyone know where I can source one?

Thanks very much for any pointers, Rob:)

I haven't seen any in stock for weeks except for people charging more for it.

The only place in stock I have found is RGB Direct where I got my S350 but they want £279.

I've had one on order with Amazon since 31 Dec and am still waiting. What's going on with Sony? Surely it doesn't take that long to produce these players even if they did sell out over Christmas?

Seems a reasonable price seeing as Sony charge dealers £235 for these players?

I've got mine ordered at Amazon for £221 and I already have 3 free discs as part of the deal. So I think I'll hold on!

I'm going to New York tomorrow and had been hoping to pick one up at a good price but - all of a sudden - they seem to be extremel rare.

Shops have run out of stock and those that do have them have bumped the price up (last week they were $299 and now they are $399)

Other good quality models (Panasonic 55, Sanyo 2500) are also extremely rare. :(

I have a horrible feeling that I will be going to the States during a fallow period when the old models are being phased out and the new models are yet to be released.

Hence tumble-weeds are blowing through the Blu Ray player sections in all the larger electical stores.

Richersounds no longer have stock on their website and like everyone else are over due stock from SONY. Just called Richer Sounds Milton Keynes branch in my last hope (4th Richer Sounds store I called today) and they have confirmed they have none in store either and are awaiting shipment from Sony.

Guess Panasonic are clearing up with higher sales during this shortage although wonder if this will mean Panasonic will consider dropping their price on the BD55 once the flood of the S550's hit the UK again....

Any probs running these in the UK using a basic Maplin type voltage step down transformer. My US PS3 has packed up and may have to buy a UK one and have lots of US region blurays. Am in US later this month and can get to Best Buy.

    Thanks

    Dave

Richer Sounds just told me the 550 has been discontinued. Is this correct?

When I was calling RS a week ago they told me they were expecting stock late March, and that none of their shops in the country had stock at the moment.

Fortunately Liam @ Prog AV still had one so bought that one

I heard there were some new ones coming, not until August though. Will probably offer wireless ethernet connection, but no major changes I think.

Seems like the shelf life of a BD player is 6 months these days.

Oh well, something new to buy. Every cloud and all that.

Do you think the new players will give an improved sound and picture quality or is it just the wireless connectivity we're paying for King??

I guess the wireless is the big plus here :smashin: not sure about the sound and video but you never know of course.
    Should be interesting anyway? :)

    Yes, certainly worth a look.

    I'm already tempted.

Maybe the S360 will be bitstream only? guessing of course and the S560 bitstream plus decoding.
S760 not sure if this is going to be Sonys flagship BD player or not.

Had one of these players on order since beginning of January. Was thinking of ordering the 350 as fed up of waiting when I walked past the Sony shop in Bournemouth on Wednesday and saw the player for sale for £264.00 rushed in and bought it!!! The shop was deserted so I had bought the player and left in under 2 mins.:D

Just spoken to someone at Richer Sounds (over the 'phone) about the s550 and he also stated they were end of line now. I asked him if that meant Sony were no longer making them and he said:

"They are still being made, but I think we're not buying any more due to the poor strength of the £ against the Yen"

So - the only place near me with them in stock is the Sony Centre which has 2. Priced at £320.

These (£219) are service returns (repaired) not new products. I checked with Richer Sounds this week, they have no new stock and do not intend to reorder due to pricing.

I've now given up on getting a 550, I'm going to hold out until the new players are launched later in the year.

I phoned up Richer Sounds in Southgate today, they told me they had none in stock. I then phone CS in Manchester and asked which stores had any S550s in stock and was told there were a few 'open boxed' players in some London Branches, including the Southgate branch.

So I phoned Southgate back and was informed there was a display model available. I promply reserved it, price £249.99 ( included a free coffee in store)

So there's a few 'ex' display models that are still available in various branches so if anyone is still looking for an S550 it's worth phoning up to see if the display model is still available. They didn't discount it any further being a display model but a penny under £250 for a MR S550 is still a stonking price, and although it didn't work for me you should still haggle for a discount if it's an ex display model.

It's a very odd situation - Sony seem to have never ramped up production on these units despite clearly being a great design and to start with well priced compared to the competition. It was a golden opportunity for them to kick start blu-ray in a big way but have somehow fumbled the ball. The new models look great on paper but are too far away at the moment to hinder sales of the current model. It has certainly put back my adoption of blu-ray for probably around a year.

I was in Superfi in Nottingham at lunchtime.

Saw they had a 550 on display.

Chap I spoke to said they'd had a load in this morning.
