2. Make sure there isn't a disc in the machine.
3. Now on the OneforAll remote press 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (The display will flash OK and turn off)
4. Put the player back into standby with the Sony remote
5. That’s it, the next time you turn on the player it will be region free for DVD playback
If the blue 24p light doesn’t flash then it hasn’t worked, try a new set of batteries and start a fresh

Awesome -thanks!
Does this also work for the S590 (Sony BDP-S590)?

Do I need a specific universal remote control or will any model of the "All for one", "Logitech Harmony" series or other brand?
I don't have or have any experience with universal remotes, but if they indeed replace all of the functions of my existing remotes I guess they're worth the outlay and I might consider getting a proper one. If not, what's the cheapest one I can use just for making the unit region free?

I understand that this only makes it region free for DVDs while for Blueray you need the unit to be hardware modified by specialists (not a DIY job), correct?

Thanks I just used this procedure on a BDP-S790 and it worked fine. I used a one-for-all URC 7950 remote which you can buy online for about £10. This procedure only makes the player region-free for DVD, not Blu Ray.

Region 1 players cannot be unlocked using this method.

This works using the OFA URC-7140.

The only thing I did differently was using code 1516 instead of 20533 in the first step.

>>> Am confused :confused: ...

(i) Why can't this be done with the dedicated remote which came with the DVD player?
(ii) Will Shgall75's instructions work for a Sony BDP-S185?
(iii) Are there separate codes for making the player region-free for Blu-Ray playback?

Many thanks. :zonked:

Hi, tried this procedure on my BDP-S185 using an URC-3940 but no joy.

Tried twice and fairly confident of following to the letter, but before going for a third attempt....

Do I need to use the code first to pair the universal remote to the DVD player?
Any obvious points I may be missing?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Massive thanks for this post.
Just made my Sony BDP 590 region free from a Region Locked player bought from NZ.
One for All Remote URC11- 2981 (newer 8 in 1 remote) bought from Big W worked well for unlocking and was only aud2/= more costly than the URC3940 (1in4) Was initially uncertain to buy this remote urc 2981, the cue is: you have to look if it has the magic button.
Cheers

Don't suppose anyone knows the cheapest place to buy one of these remotes locally (as in the major high street retailers)?

We had some electrical work done on the weekend and when I plugged everything back in afterwards my Oppo DV-981 the power board fried (apparently a common fault). Gutted, as it was a fantastic DVD player and I only used it every now and then, so it's still in great condition. The cost of replacing said board is prohibitive because Oppo are US-based and the deinterlacing on my region free EP-35 HD DVD player is terrible - jaggies everywhere.

To my surprise the S590 looks like it actually deinterlaces pretty well - at least with PAL material, obviously can't test NTSC yet - so I figured this is the cheapest way to regain multi-region DVD capability in acceptable quality. Not sure it's going to be quite as good as the Oppo, but the amount of SD content I watch now is minimal, so having something that does a fairly good job at deinterlacing is preferable to spending loads on a dedicated DVD player.

I know most of that was extraneous information, but I needed to share my tragedy with the group for therapeutic reasons! :D

Ta. Luckily I was able to borrow one this evening to hack the player. Not sure it's quite on par with the Oppo in all areas, but the one thing it offers that the Oppo didn't is 24p playback of 'progressive' NTSC DVDs, which is nice.

I'm at my wit's end. Have a S790 (bought in Germany) and bought a URC-3920 universal remote. This combination seems to have worked for several people here. Connected Sony TV and Blu-Ray/DVD to it with a different code (21516) because the one listed above did not work and this other one did. Then followed ALL the steps like 8 times. Everything was fine. The device even shut off at the end like it should. Then I put in a region 1 disc and the message pops up of it being the wrong region and unreadable.

What is going on? Why has it worked for others with the same combination. This is so frustrating. If I cannot unlock it, I have to send it back which is sad and a hassle.

Please help! Thx.

I have a One For All URC-11-7557 which has the Magic Button and am trying to enable a Sony S-790 for MR DVD
I have been unsuccessful using the codes in Post #1

Is there any alternative codes or method to make this play Region 1

Has anyone been able to unlock the S790 with an All For One 7960 remote?

Just asking as this remote appears to work with the S4100 and I actually need to unlock both players. :)

It appears that not all Universal OFA work in unlocking a Sony even if it has a "Magic" button I gave up trying to do my S-790 with a URC-11-7557
I eventually took it to my local Sony shop and you made it DVD MR for £20.00

I had to use 0533 instead of 20533 (point 3 in first post)worked on my European bdp790
rest is same code process. In fact the same codes also workes for hx710 hx510 sony recorders and blu ray player bdp 350 and 360 did them myself in the past with same code
Only for dvd free ofcourse.

Hello,

Is it at all possible to make S790 region free for Blu-ray, or at least able to play A/1 region? Or is that completely impossible and totally out of the question?

Technically it shouldn't be unthinkable.
