Sony announces new A1 4K OLED TV with Dolby Vision - news discussion

What is HDMI 2.1?

More bandwidth, rumoured from a white paper last year that dynamic hdr10 (think if it acting more like Dolby Vision, so each frame can be adjusted) may may require hdmi 2.1. Never been confirmed/denied (as far as I know) so we are all in a pickle about buying a new 2017 tv if all the 2018 models will have it, futureproofing and all that-but it may not be required and could be several years away but...

Not too bad at all.

Blimey 1.999 for the 55" Sony, maybe that pre Ces quote about the prices were right, Lg must be competitive against this if true....prices might finally be coming down.

I always had problems getting them to work. As a child I never could. Only as I got older did I see the picture beneath.

You just made me feel really old. I was in my 20 when these things came out. Anyone remember those spinning discs with holograms on them? They rocked.

I'm struggling to take that as indication of the final price. I can't imagine what they are basing that on. It would basically put them at parity with the price of the XD93 edge lit LED which makes zero sense. If that retailer honours pre-order prices though some av fans in Holland could potentially feel as though they've won the lottery in the coming months. :)

I don't think we'll see genuine prices until LG have put their cards on the table, and then my suspicion is the Sony sets will come in at around the same price as this year's E or G series sets from LG. I'd love to think the 65" option would come in under £4000 but I'm just not hopeful.

A Dutch store is already taking pre-orders for the Sony A1 the 55 inch is apparently €1.999 euro's. Just paid for one, even it is a mistake they still should deliver according Dutch law.

I can feel a road trip to Holland coming on.

Wow they're really selling them cheap if those prices are right which would tie up with what the Sony President said a while ago with the US pricing - maybe LGE have been artificially holding prices high although that would also mean Panasonic have just plain old been ripping people off with their OLED prices!

As an aside I've pulled together a petition for anyone wanting 3D on their OLED - please sign this if you're wanting 3D on an OLED:

LG Electronics: LG Electronics - Please revive 3D on a 2018 OLED TV model

Good luck with your petition. Can't see it even getting a look in though without 100,000 plus votes.

If it is so easy to get rid of 3d as a fad, then what stops them doing the same with 4K and HDR? These companies aren't reassuring me as a consumer. You buy into their latest innovations only to be left hanging with a ron of material you ca n no longer watch or benefit from. Makes you wonder if you should buy into their new products at all.

Thanks - I'm not actually sure how big the OLED market is to be honest - I've seen reports of 335k units in 2015 and then they sold 113k units just in the first quarter of 2016 (LG aims to triple OLED TV sales in 2016 - Nikkei Asian Review)

It will be interesting to see how well it sells now Panasonic and Sony are in the game - especially Sony if they're really pricing them that aggressively (I'm guessing Panasonic will come in at the high end of all of them!)

It's not as if 3D was a flash in the pan though. It's had a pretty good innings really and it was always something that only some wanted.

Resolution wise everything is going 4k. How much 3D broadcast was there.

I tried to order a 65" but my winkelwagen is leeg :(

It seems like they are no longer taking pre-orders on either model, and if you browse through the oled tv's the sony isn't listed, only the LGs and they aren't the cheapest prices either. I would expect them to cancel any pre-orders claiming that someone had made a mistake. If Dutch law is anything like UK law then have the right to do that.

Just received an order confirmation by email of the Sony A1 for €1.999 euro from the shop. It seems to be a legit price.

In the UK not so much but in Germany they still have a Sky 3D channel operating which has plenty of movie and documentary content in SBS format.

1080p 3D used a lot of bandwidth with it's frame packed format, maybe in the days of 8K and HDMI 2.1 it may make a reappearance (I can only live in hope!)

I'm actually a law graduate, different specialism but according to the private consumer law in Holland, a company with a price mistake still have the responsibility to deliver the item when the price is within a reasonable range while it got confirmed by email. OLED 4K TVs are already getting sold for €2000,- euros or even lower.

Just read this website in Google translate.
De webwinkel wil niet leveren voor de afgesproken prijs. Mag dat? | ConsuWijzer.nl

So yes, I will get the Sony A1 for €1.999 euro. Paid the money, and the company made an confirmation about it by email.

But still only 1 channel. It was always going to be a niche market. In truth 3D is always better on a huge screen in a cinema. The average home screen now is around 50-55 so not exactly pushing the boundaries of 3D. I have plenty of 3D movies but I've never watched any (I just ended up buying the 3ad blurays in case I ever wanted to watch them when they were on sale as it wasn't much. More than the standard movie alone.

3D is definitely good on a big screen - brightness wise the 2016 OLEDs are way better than any 3D I've seen at a cinema - we've got an IMAX nearby in Bradford and I usually go to the Showcase in Leeds which has an XPlus and they just don't compare.

The 2016 OLEDs are doing 3D at the brightness levels of a calibrated SDR set whereas other sets were less than half as bright. Just a shame it's been ditched as they had it worked out but they needed the brightness for HDR.

At the end of the day of the day they'd have to make a decision based on the waning sales of 3D blurays. next they'll stop the media too and it will be dead in the water

I think Trolls 3D may be the first casualty - I haven't seen the 3D Blu-ray up anywhere whereas the 2d and UHD are available to preorder. I've got Doctor Strange and Rogue One 3D preordered so I just hope they hit!

They both worked very well as 3D in the cinema. I guess in truth for those worrying about the demise of 3D, you must already have a good 3D set to be enjoying it at its best. So unless you are the sort to change TV every year or so you should be covered for a while.
