Another DV capable player. Things are shaping up nicely.
And only £270 too

Quickly checks amazon credit card in hand to put in a pre-order and comes away disappointed...
But Sony UK are on the ball Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™ Player | UBP-X700

Only 1.4kg vs the 3.8kg of the X800 though means it's going to be pretty flimsy in build :(
That's lighter than the 1.67kg LG UB970 which isn't known as being tank like.

Promptly puts credit card away until reviews are out. My experience of flimsy build Sony players is noisy drives :(

DV available in the summer!!! That’s not great when pana has both hdr standard from launch
With Sony, summer could easily mean end of 2018 based on past experience...
Logical move and good price but could do much better than this...

It's also shown on the Sony website page for it although not very obvious. The little blue number 1 next to Dolby Vision heading brings up a popup box when clicked "This feature will be made available via future firmware update in 2018 summer."

Although to be fair to Sony there is no release date for the Panasonic UB820 so it could be summer time as well for it. And Panasonic are only providing HDR10+ via firmware update on the UB420, date unspecified, not on launch.

But with the fiasco of the LG DV update delays I'll be wanting it available before I buy anything. Who knows, by summer the Oppo 203 may even be glitch free... :)

Another DV player is great and from Sony at last. But it should be DV ready from the get go.
Will it be 2019 before they issue the update?
Peeps are still waiting for the A1 to be updated nearly a year later...

I'll pass on this and get the new Panasonic player which probably does HDR10+ AND DV out of the box instead of promises of a possible firmware update......Sony needs to change their game !

      Disappointed!
Panasonic didn't state firmware date however.
Might wait for more information first.

My 203 has been glitch free for ages. I put it down to the Oppo rewarding me for my repeat viewings of Predator and Aliens DC. It has a hidden taste meter and saves the glitches for people who ignore truly monumental movies. :D

Thanks for the notice OP, this was what I was hoping/waiting for.

However any enthusiasm is tempered; it seems Sony giveth (maybe) and also taketh away.

They couldn't just add DV support (actually ADD, not say they may at some time in the future...maybe) to the otherwise very well received X800. No, it looks like they've downgraded the build quality - at the very least - to some degree, and it will not support DV...yet.

Pretty poor really. I won't be buying until it actually supports DV. From what I hear a similar promise (is that the word?) from LG was not delivered on.

Hmm I was hoping for something better as I have just got my new KD55 A1 with dolby v due sometime:censored:and my existing panny dvd won't do 4k ultra which I foolishly thought it did:facepalm: and I've got some ultra dvd s for Christmas burning a hole! If the Sony came with dv then I would jump but after seeing the wait time plus the questions about build quality I am leaning toward the oppo given its reviews and yes its potential glitches. Maybe the newer players might push the oppo price down:rolleyes: I guess I will wait and see what reviews the new Sony gets tho as swmbo has been amazing so far but there are some extra items required for the upgrade of our cinema experience that the oppo might just torpedo !

Does this mean there will be no successor to the STR-DN1080 this year?

Another reason for me to not get one then as it would be fed an almost exclusive diet of Michael Bay type junk movies. :(

And I don't know if I want a player which would censor my movie watching by making anything it doesn't approve of a glitchy mess of stuttering, skipping and pixelation. :)

Is there a hidden control like parental control on the Oppo where you can change the player from its default setting of 'only truly monumental movies glitchfree playback', to 'all junk movies glitchfree playback'...;)

75% of the new pannys will not have HDR10+ at launch. 25% of the new pannys will get HDR10+ via a later firmware update. 50% of the new pannys are noted not to have HDR10+ at all.

Where did you see they will convert HDR10+ to HDR10?
I'm not sure the text on the panasonic website supports HDR playback of HDR10+ means it will convert it to HDR rather than just it will playback HDR10+. We'll probably know closer to release when the detailed reviews come out. Obviously it would be nice if it could for those TVs not getting HDR10+.

Wish the Sony was an X850 or X900 by just adding DV to the existing X800 spec and chasis. May well buy the later now due to my SACD collection and upgrade it in a couple of years.

Having just bought a sony 75 inch xe94 and x800 combo just before Christmas I was hoping Sony would introduce new higher end Dolby Atmos ES receivers for the UK market. I might need to consider importing the Z5000ES from the US.:(

Such a feature would be utterly pointless as ALL UHD discs must have a base HDR10 layer by default so no need to convert anything to HDR10. It's already there!

I think it's more subtle than that. I watch some fairly trashy films too. As long as you watch a good one now and again it behaves itself.

Tell @ashenfie not me. He's the one who raised it in post #12 to which I was replying to.
I think the pannys already have HDR10+ with HDR10+ tp HDR10 conversion for good measure

I'm guessing he was meaning something like the HDR10+ conversion to DV being mentioned in the Oppo thread i.e. the player taking a HDR10+ stream but converting it to a HDR10 output stream while applying the dynamic metadata from HDR10+ to it on a scene by scene basis.

Sort of like the LG 2017 Oleds do to HDR10 with their active HDR feature but rather than LG processing, instead using the HDR10+ metadata. HDR10 and HLG are rendered by LG OLED TV's exclusive processing. By applying dynamic data produced by LG TV processing on a scene-by-scene basis, all types of content is displayed with improved HDR quality. http://www.lg.com/uk/lgoled/Test/02_HDR.jsp#HDR_Processing See the graphic below

      activehdr31_right.jpg

This obviously, if it could be done, would have benefits of providing an improved HDR10 output for TVs which can't process HDR10+ themselves. But as I said, this would seem to be based solely on the interpretation of a single phrase on the Panasonic website as I haven't seen any other mention of it. If the above was the case I'd think Panasonic would have been making more of a song and dance about it.

It was a typo meant HLG to HDR10. How it works i have no idea, but the what have said makes sense.

That's a shame, I was starting to warm to the idea of this.
I can spend a lot of time mucking around sometimes with the players picture adjustment controls and the thought of this being done automatically instead is quite appealing.

It looks like the US model has a 12V power input, will I be able to use the US model in Europe without a converter?

Doesn't that just mean the transformer is outside the player rather than inside? Basically we won't know until it is in the wild. At worst, you would just need to get a 240v power brick to use it here.

Places have started to take orders for this now.
Still a gamble and I think to avoid waiting for firmware update Panasonic is not out yet and I think they will release once they can make it DV out of the box so still means you need to wait for DV unless you want to spend money on Oppo.

Well Panny wont get DV and this is meant to according to Sony so if your looking for DV then this is cheapest you will get. LG can be had for cheaper but its hit and miss with loud noise and freezing.
