I've just had a Currys engineer round to look at my JVC AV28T77, which has terrible geometry and is being replaced at his recommendation. Anyway we were discussing the qualities of various manufacturers and he said that Grundig TVs have Sony tubes in them.
Does anyone know if this is actually true?

My 20 year old Grundig 15inch portable has a Toshiba tube, but that was when Grundig were a proper manufacturer. :D

As far as I know Sony only manufacture CRT's for themselves.
Other CRT manufacturers use their technology, the aperture grille for example, but a Sony CRT is only found in Sony TV's.

Ah, they may well use other CRT's than their own for sure, but that's a lot different to supplying CRT's to other manufacturers - I'm sure they don't. I'm certain you won't find a set other than a Sony with a Sony CRT in it.

All Sony products that use CRT's have a Sony CRT in them. Plasma and LCD are different, as most manufacturers use other peoples panels (Fujitsu are probably the biggest seller of Plasma and LCD Panels).

You will find a lot of Sony CRT's in computer monitors, but not a lot of other TV's.

All Sony CRT TVs use Sony tubes, all Sony TV tubes go into Sony TVs, computer monitors are different.

As some one once said a high end TV based around a Wega tube would be fantastic

Sony use only Sony tubes. However, they will supply their tubes to other manufacturers - they will not license their technology to other manufacturers. For similar reasons Sony will not make shadow mask crts - they will not pay license revenue to other manufacturers. regards, yt.

But only for computer monitors, no? I'm pretty sure that Trinitron CRTs are still a unique selling point for Sony TV.
