I have had my Sony 930 for a year now without problems.

Today I was playing Chicken-Run in DTS when the word "PROTECTOR"
appeared flashing on the display, during the first minute of the disc when the dog starts barking.

All sound was cut and the amp did not respond to anything but power-off.

I had the volume at about 3. That's 11-o'clock not 3 o'clock, so not very loud at all.

Any idea what is going on here. There is no mention of such errors/warnings in the manual.

    Playing from Sony-725.

    TIA
    Mike.

"PROTECTOR" is Sony Amps way of saying
    'I am stuffed'.

    It's a safety cut-off.

I have had this problem with 2-3 Sony AV Amps over the years (different models) and it is normally caused by and internal fault (such as a short, or heat problems). Other causes can be poor speaker wiring causing a short on 1 or more channels.

The last Amp that gave me this problem had a socket chip that had started to come away from the main PCB in the Amp.

Check your wiring on the back and the heat the Amp generates. Otherwise you’re off down your local dealer to get it looked at unless your electronically minded.

If it’s an internal fault the Amp is liable to work but start to cut out more and more frequently and it wont do the Amp and favours.

I remember reading a lot of information on the 'Protector' message on an american forum. Try a search on Hometheaterforum.com.
