This box appears to be the subject of much confusion!

Can anyone help with the following:-

Is the optical output enabled on the Sony 760 for connection to an amp. If not, can it be?

If it cant be, is it better to use the phonos than the optical for standard stereo sound.

Is the sky plus system a great improvement on the standard sky system in terms of picture and sound quality.

I had this Sony Sky box and yes the optical out worked fine when connected to an amp. It will not give you DD5.1 as only Sky+ allows this.

I did notice an improvement in PQ with SKY+ and the DD5.1 (only on Movies 1,2 and 3) is well worth it. Plus you can chuck out that old VHS!! Superb!

Haven't noticed any improvement with sound on the normal channels though

As Parklife says the optical output should be active but the digibox can not access DD5.1 audio from any channel.
You should get better audio reproduction assuming the DAC in the amplifier is of higher quality than the one in the digibox which is a safe assumption:)

Picture quality is very subjective, if you are used to the picture created using one make/model digibox then changing that even to another digibox might improve things but just as likely to go the other way.
There is no solid technical reason why SKY+ should give a better picture than anyother digibox but there are too many variables (component selection/implementation etc) to dissmiss a PQ improvment. It could be simply down to a brand new box which works better than an older box you are used to plus benefits are gained with the dish/lnb and cable being checked/replaced.

SONY hasn't supplied SKY with digiboxes for a good three years now, they never supported DD5.1 audio. You will probably find a few on ebay maybe even the odd new one that has been sitting on the shelf for a while, they did good business when DD5.1 was launched due to consumer confusion:)

Only SKY+ of the current range of SKY badged hardware has an optical connection.

I believe both the 750 and 760 variants were silver(ish).
