There no much price difference between these two (about £30), anyone got any suggestions which would be best for me. I intend to hook it up to my HCPC via a digital coax, and initially have a pair of floorstanders and may be an separate subwoofer. Additional speaker connections would be a bonus.

    Anyone got any suggestions?:)

i have one- don't bother with sony av amps- IMO they're overpriced rubbish which are a pain to set up and to get a DTS signal out of. Also rubbish for music and connectivity.

Get a decent Marantz SR4300 or Yamaha HTR5400 instead.

According to Sony UK's website, the difference is the 685 goes upto 70khz for SACD (wheras presumably the 585 does not) - I wouldn't bother with SACD right now. They both look a bit limited as far as connectivity goes, looks like two digital inputs (one coaxial, one optical):-

Theyre both about £200 most places. You get's what ye pays for :)

i dont get that, whats the point in going up to 70khz when:

    1) most speakers only go upto 20khz

    2) and more importantly, the range of human hearing only stretches to 18khz, max

Speakers don't really stop outputting frequencies above or below thier -3dB point, it's merely that they don't make a very good job of it.

And don't ask what's the point of recording more than 20KHz - there are plenty of threads where people have discussed the merits of ultrasonic recording - and no two people have exactly the same opinion.:)

Give me a minute and I'll dig up a relevant thread.

For the moment, biologists aren't entirely sure if we aren't capable of hearing information at ultrasonic frequencies, or if we aren't capable of consciously processing that information. Thus the argument is that we do actually hear ultrasonics and it affects our opinion of the musical reproduction. There are also arguments for moving the reconstruction filtering beyond the range of human hearing in order to reduce treble harshness (the reason that audiophiles complained about CD in the early days).
