Anyone own/experienced/read review of the new 55XE85 range? I can get it for £1055 whereas the 55XE90 is £1600 - wondering is it worth the extra £550 ?

Thanks

If you're interested in HDR then you'll definitely want the XE90 for the local dimming and higher peak brightness. If you're not fussed about HDR then the XE85 will probably be fine. Just be aware that while Sony may claim HDR support on the 85 it doesn't actually have the hardware to do it properly, the 90 does.

Where does it state that the XE85 doesn't have the actual hardware? Just curious :)

Flatpanels HD have a review of the XE85 that uses those words or similar if you must have a source. The point is that HDR will look terrible on the XE85 because it is an edge lit LCD without local dimming. Technically yes it capable of receiving and processing an HDR signal but you would never want to feed an XE85 with an HDR signal. If you do the TV will max out the backlight and this will ruin the black levels, thus dramatically reducing contrast. This TV uses a VA panel but it will look like IPS with the backlight maxed out. As it lacks local dimming the XE85 can do nothing about this problem. HDR is a complete con on the XE85 and other edge lit LCDs as it simply doesn't have the hardware to reproduce it properly. The only TV's that can reproduce HDR properly are the 2 Slim Backlight Drive Sony models (XD93, XE93), FALD LCDs and OLED.
