In the Xmas catalogue is a 50" LCD Sony TV, HD ready for £1399 inlc stand. Ref FE50A12U Cat 536/2695

This seems too good to be true? Anyone any experience with this TV and why should I save for the PV500 Panasonic for the new year and sepnd over £2000 more.

    Help !

With a depth of "(D)40.8cm" I assume that it's a rear projection set.

Probably an LCD rear-pro rather than an LCD direct-view then. There are LCD as well as DLP rear-pros on the market - in fact Sony don't have a DLP rear pro in their range, they have transmissive and reflective LCD rear-pros.

There's a lot of discussion about this model over in the RP TV forum. Basically it boils down to those who, having seen it or bought it, are very impressed, and those who either simply believe that only DLP can produce a good image in rear projection, or who have seen it in comparison with certain DLP models and prefer the latter.

It's a lot of inches for the money and, depending on how particular you are about absolute black levels (in which respect, it is hugely better than many of its predecessors with this technology) is probably a pretty good value buy.

Unlike direct view LCDs, it has some depth so it can't (for example) realistically be wall mounted.

Thank you for link and information guys.

Really helpful. I'm going to have a look and read the other links in the forum (now I know what it is!)
