I can get the Sony for £300, the 5200 for £360 and the 4200 for £270.

I'm not sure which way to go! In addition to movies, I'd also like my amp to sound good with music.

Although the Sony has more power, it lacks PL2. Is PL2 really that much better to listen to music with?

    Help appreciated, thanks!

Each has it's pros and cons - it depends really on where your priorities lie.

DPL2 isn't just for music, although there is a music mode. It's also for stereo movies (ie HiFi stereo VHS tape, Sky etc), most of which are Dolby Surround encoded - where it makes a better job of surround sound than plain old ProLogic.

The Sony has 6.1 capability but no DPL2, whereas the 4200 is 5.1 only but has DPL2. The 5200 has both, but costs more. The 4200 also has no 5.1 input (which is needed for DVD-A/SACD). The 5200 also has CS5.1 surround which is SRS Labs stab at what DPL2 does (this has recently been superceded with CSII (aka CS6.1) which is reportedly better than either).
Of the three, sound quality wise, I suspect you'd find the 5200 the best balance for movies and music, with the Sony being the best at DD/DTS movies, but opinions will probably vary on that.
Of the three, I'd probably plump for the 5200 given your requirements, but see if you can get a demo (some people rave over the 5200 and others say it's average, while some say the stereo performance of the 1070 is poor, while others claim it's perfectly OK, given the type of product it is)

There are new models coming out as well, many with more features than any of the models mentioned, for similar money. You'd have to get a demo to decide on which sounds best though, and how they compare sound-wise with the current generation of AV amps.

Thanks very much for that MikeK. I will have a listen before I buy, but wanted to have an idea beforehand. Anyone else any thoughts? There must be a few of you out there who have faced a similar decision!

What are people's views on 5200 v 1070 in stereo?

    Cheers

Just demoed the 5200 vs yam630. Bought the 5200 because the stereo clarity and integrity was better than the yam. Didnt look at the sony. got the 5200 from a shop! (not the net) for £360.

The Marantz just seems to be more in control across the frquency range. DAC was pretty good as well better than the one on my Sony 735 DVD player.

The Marantz doesnt have as many bells and whistles as the sony and the yamaha (according to hard specs) but it had enough to convince me.

I have the 1070 and think its superb but that my opinion.

I mainly listen to DVD Audio and again this is superb.

Normal cd's sound great too providing they are good recordings in the first place. I find the 1070 will emphasise a bad recording.

I would only consider a denon AVR3802 over my sony 1070.

You`ll find most peeps recommend the marantz, although the SR5200 would the better option over the 2 marantz.

    Hope that helps..

I have had both a Sony 1070 and a Marantz 6200 and for me there was no choice as the Marantz won hands down. In my opinion PL2 is terrible for music but is a good enhancement for TV progs.

"The 5200 also has CS5.1 surround which is SRS Labs stab at what DPL2 does."

The sr5200 doesnt actually have circle surround,it starts on the 6200 and up.

OOPS - always get them Marantz's muddled up.

The 6200 is available for £399 from HomeCinemaHeaven (at least it was).

To be honest though, I wouldn't be overly concerned about CS5.1 anyway - DPL2 does a similar thing. CSII (CS6.1) is supposed to be better though, but AFAIK, the only AV amps with that for the moment, are the forthcoming Kenwood midrange models (the KRFX9060)

As a matter of interest, what is CS5.1 or CSII?

Another matrixed surround format. Similar to PL2 but to my ears on my Marantz an awful mess.

I thought I was going mad(der) then!! The only thing I can find that resembles it is 5 channel stereo, and that gets a wide berth.
