Sony will officially announce the PlayStation 4 launch date at its press conference before the start of Gamescon 2013.

As the holiday season approaches, expectation is hotting up when it comes to the two big next-gen consoles, with gamers wanting to know when they’ll be released, where they’ll be released and how many will be released. Well as far as the first question is concerned, we should soon have official confirmation from both Microsoft and Sony about the actual launch dates of their respective machines. Last week Sony revealed on their official ‘Sony at Gamescon’ page that they’ll “kick off the show at 18:00 BST on 20 August 2013 with a briefing to media on our release plans for PlayStation 4, as well as updates on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.”

Initial estimates on the launch of the PS4 suggested early December but recent leaks seem to suggest that the PS4 release date will be on the 21st of October, up to a month before the rival XBox One is expected to hit the streets in November. To date Sony has only revealed that the PS4 release date will be during the “2013 holiday season” but large retailers have begun to list a release date that would seem to confirm the rumours of an earlier release. The next-gen console battle is already hotting up, with Sony taking an early lead thanks to a better planned launch for the PS4 and a price of £349, making it £80 cheaper than the £429 Xbox One. As a result day one pre-order stocks have already sold out, suggesting Sony may have supply issues in the run up to Christmas.
