I want to get a centre speaker for my Mission 773e pair. However I am having difficulty tracking down a 77c1, as these are now a couple of generations old and nobody has any stock any more. Looking in classifieds and on ebay but I don't hold out much hope ..

I was thinking about buying one of the newer Mission speakers - say the m7c - will it still be a reasonable match? Or will it sound odd?

It will sound odd, and the worst place to have mis-matched voicing between speakers is across a front soundstage. Were I you, I'd keep waiting for the 77C1 you're after to pop up - they always do eventually (fortunately I got hold of one).

I understand, all of the Mission 'M' range have the same tonal qualities and timbre so you could actually use the M7c1 or the M7c2 which are both very, very good speakers.
However, of the two, the M7c2 is supposed to be the subjectively better speaker - although in my opinion, it does not look as nice

Here is a good UK supplier -

    www.hifibitz.co.uk

By the way, I asked Mission the above info at a recent trade show and they say that these will match.

    Hope this helps.

I asked them too, at the What Hi Fi show near Olympia, although embarassingly I completely forgot what they told me

I will have a listen to that speaker and see how it sounds.

If I were you I'd actually go for the M5C rather than M7C1 or M7C2. Saying that, if you can find a 77C1, that is the best match, as I found comparing the two with my 773e's and 77DS's.

In fact, I now use both the M5C and 77C1 in a (frowned-upon) double-centre configuration, which in my opinon adds power and focus to voices compared to the 77C1 on its own.

The centre channel just has a bit more welly, so voices do not get drowned out by music coming out of other speakers. With just one centre speaker I used to increase the volume of the centre channel by a few dB's to make it more prominent. Now I don't need to.

i had a Mission 77c1- awful , dire centre speaker

my Celestion Centre 2 sounded better

the Mission m78c is a nice sounding centre speaker though and the material of the drive units is closer to the 77 series than the m7cx range

remember that 50% of the movie goes to the centre speaker, so its arguably the most important speaker. get a good 'un, don't settle for 2nd best.

the latest good match is a v6c which (if you have room for it) is pretty good.
