I saw some pictures recently of 'frozen motion' taken with an ordinary digicam and a flashgun. What was extraordinary was seeing things like water filled baloons in hitting the floor and water drops here .
Anyway I thought I'd have a go myself. 20 minutes later with a bit of messing about with a flashgun and bits of wire and I have some pictures :)
The trick is to get the flash to fire by a switch that is triggered by the event - or in my case a bit of wire taped to the hammer handle meeting a aluminium bar. My Oly 5050 was set to 4 seconds and f4 in darkness.
I looked into why my 3rd picture has motion blur. My very old flashgun is too basic. I need one with manual controls so I can turn the power right down and get a very short duration flash.
    pics attached - with luck.
