I've been looking to get an LCD for the study. Something fairly cheep and cheerful, as it won't get a lot of use. Probably between 17 and 22 inches.

I had been defaulting to only looking at widescreens, as it simply seemed the obvious route to go. However, as it's main source will be regular terrestrial or a freeview box, is there much point going for widescreen? Would 4:3 make more sense and give me more screen for my money?

The more sets I look at and the more I read this forum, the further I seem to get away from knowing what to get! So, any pointers towards something that's half decent in the sub £400 range would be very welcome.

If you look at dealtime.co.uk they have a range of makes/ models and prices.Cheapest 20" I found is a Relysys RLT200 for £350.
For !7" you have the following:
    Relysys RLT1720 starting at £298
    Umax Yamada " £284
Videosonic LTV17D " £242 ( this looks a good option as its HDTV ready therefore giving you some future proofing)
    Viewsonic N1700W £249

    Hope that helps
Nb further searches may reveal cheaper prices although these seem very keen
