I have an azur 540r, and have had in the past sherwood amps which i had stuff on top of, and they broke (both the same fault) and i wonder if it was heat build up causing this.

Im now terrified of putting things on top of my amp, where there is loads of vents and although i don't feel much heat rising (there is some but not boiling), its very hot to touch.

So the question is, will putting things on top of the amp, or not leaving much room for ventilation in general (there'll be lots round side and back) damage the amp and/or shorten the life of the amp. I realise there is safety circuits but i'd rather not test them out!

Someone told me the Azur amp had a fan, i see no fan or hear no fan, can anyone confirm this?

the azur as i guess u know does get very hot, so i guess it would be best if u didnt put something on top, it deffinetly needs to be well ventilated.

No idea how hot the 540R gets (my Marantz with it's meaty current feedback tech gets pretty warm) but you could try creating a shelf above it to give it some more breathing space. I used to have a few halved squash balls with a board of wood on top of that rested on my old Denon 1802 so I could put my DVD player above it. :)

if you look at my stand, with a drill i could move the middle shelf down, how much room do you think is needed? were the half squash balls enough? thanks

The squash balls were enough but the 1802 didn't get very warm. My 7400 in it's cabinet has about 6cm above it and more to the side which seems to be plenty. A couple of inches should be OK for most people but it would be best to check the manual for this information.

What are you actually trying to achieve here? :)

i wanted to keep silver things together (away from my black arcam), the dvd player is smaller than the reciever so it looks pants underneath, and i wanted to put the dvd player on top, but it seems more trouble than its worth. Answer - Azur dvd player.
