And Yet Again, But General AV/Hi-Fi Articles

I haven't had a chance to read all the articles but I definately thought the Component and Power cables articles were interesting and could kick-off a few discussions.
Also note in the Component article how they slate the soldering of a "Better**known**" cable.

This from the man who's spend the GDP of a small country on cables. :clown:

    Didn't I send you the links to audioholics.com? ;)

    Very interesting stuff indeed.

My very oldest friend is a senior electrical/electronic engineer in the Navy's Fleet Air Arm, he tells me that the military have to address serious RFI/EMI and earth/clean power issues; particularly with aircraft. The solutions they use are very similar to some approaches in high-end AV, albeit with much cheaper supplies.

However, the cockpit of a Sea Harrier or the bridge of an aircraft carrier are very different places to your living room sofa!

    :) :) :D ;)

:rotfl: Not if you're watching Top Gun and have the subs whacked on full blast! :clown:

Ticked my fancy, as some stuff I've recently seen has "components from aerospace industry" listed as a benefit.

Also, telling me about solving earth/ground loop problems with a helicopter that's in the air was interesting. :lesson: Don't get dropped by a winch from a helicopter until the ground wire has dropped first.

    Right you are.

Only read the one on component cables.

I'll be buying only the nice Canare crimped ones from now on anyway.

Perhaps it's also worth pointing out that the article is written by Charles Altmann, of Altmann Micro Machines, who manufacture the UPCI device which the article is plugging!

I'm not saying anything about the information in the article, just that if you want explanations about the effects of jitter, I'd question whether it's best to get those from a manufacturer of a device which claims to cure it.

I wonder if Gordon could email audioholics and explain why 'high end' mains cables offer improvements in audio?

Yes, but that Altmann's jitter knowledge is pretty spot on. It's perhaps no coincidence then that his jitter busters (UPCI and JISCO) work remarkably well (they were both covered in recent editions of HiFi News).

    Hello all

A bit late I know but I hadn't read this thread before now!!!

As some of you may know I import and supply the BetterCables range of AV cables into the UK and Europe and thought a couple of 'follow up' points to the Audioholics article were in order.

    01. The cable shown with the dodgy solder may or may not have come direct from BetterCables - what I don't understand is the cable shown is fitted with an Eichmann Bullet plug (see http://www.eichmanncables.com/bullet_plug/) and whilst BetterCables do offer these on the Blue Truth range of Audio cables I've never seen them factory fitted to a Video cable.

    02. I'm not sure how old the Audioholics article is (I see it was revised in Jan 03 and then again in March 03) but its been a while since I received any BetterCables Component Video cables (Silver Serpent or Silver Reference) that had soldered RCA or BNC connectors on - see attached image.

So an interesting and informative article but any hint of BetterCables delivering less than ideal AV cables is wide of the mark.

    Best regards

    Joe

    I know, it's a stale thread...

The audioholics web site is an excellent resource. Great product reviews, too, tho somewhat limited.

Another interesting resource is Roger Russell’s web site. He retired as Dir. of Acoustic Research at McIntosh Laboratories…the folks that make those expensive, tho pretty, tube amplifiers. See what Roger has to say about speaker wire and interconnect cabling.

hi, i have my dvd conect to my tv via a component connection but with composite cable (yellow, red and white) so i put yellow on green, white on blue and red on red, well it looks better with this configuration than with the component connection, but i wish to know if worth the money to buy a real red, blue and green component cable, i mean a radioshack 20 buck component cable, cause component cables looks like ordinary rca cables.
    thank for your help
