At the risk of plaspheming, I was looking at non Pio and Panny panels (I know what a heathen!)
Does anyone have any experience with the following 50 inchers?
    Fujitsu P50XCA30EH
    NEC PX-50XM4G

HD is less crucial to me than a good sized screen with half-decent-PQ (the less processing/enhancement the better).
Good connectivity is important too. EH50 DVD, freeview, xbox, satbox..

    Thanks !

I've had a few poor experiences with NEC plasma, not my favourite. The Fuji, I have about a dozen of those out there installed, all of them with happy owners, and I was pleased with them when finished. You could maybe find a good price on that as it's not a current model. The other one to consider that's going cheap now is the Panasonic PHD7. Some great prices out there, very similar to the Fuji apart from having the modular input boards. I'd choose whichever one I could get for the right price.

Thanks Martin, I was hoping you'd chip in ;)
Looks like I might have a crack at a decent 50" after all.

No question, now is the time to buy a non HD-ready 50", or maybe one like the panny which can be made HD ready with a scaler. The Fuji lacks any digital input which is a mild pain, but can still be done with a stripper. No, not that sort, Dilsher if you are reading!

Hmmm... decent scalers can be quite pricey.
One site says of the PHD7 "High-definition capable with added optional DVD-D or HDMI terminal board" at around the £140 mark would this not do the trick?

Unfortunately the PHD7 could not accept 1080i and 720p via HDMI or DVI at 50Hz - only at 60Hz. This could be fixed by using a scaler to convert a 50Hz signal to 60Hz. I guess it would be cheaper to get a PHD8, rather than an £800 scaler/PHD7 combo!
