Mostly agree with that Steve. Enjoyable ride, that helps take the bad taste away that TLJ left. Certainly won’t be troubling any of my best of lists at the end of the year though.

that's the problem i have with the star wars franchise, cashing in on the name, but delivering a slightly above average presentation, or a par for the course caveat..i would like the dark star wars universe explored or give me something original like rogue one..but i guess when you have a franchise,,cashing in is the priority not originality to the studio, at he expense of the fans ....

I think you're overselling it. Even if you cut away all the bad parts of TLJ, what you're left with is still vastly more entertaining that what we get here. I think Solo is the least impressive live action star wars film out of the ten. And that godawful shrieking droid is worse than Jar Jar.

Still, I'm pleased others are enjoying it. I'm not one of those gits who thinks every negative experience signals the death-knell of the franchise.

To be fair (and I wasn't impressed with Solo) this film feels very respectful to star wars lore and canon. There should be little to complain about in that respect.

What a PR disaster this will be for Disney if yet again despite troubled production they've managed to make a spin-off more 'Star Warsy' than their main cannon efforts...

Expectations still set to zero after that last effort but as long as it's fun, looks and feels like OT Star Wars then I've learnt not to ask for much more than that from a Star Wars film made after 1983...

      Absolutely.

I'd groan if they decide to make sequels to this, given that there's so much else to explore in this universe. Rogue One proved you don't need to make films about established characters and it's ok to go off the reservation.

Disastrous Last Jedi? I wasn't sold by it but it was far from disastrous.

Solo is the second best ‘new’ Star Wars film.

Thanks for the review Steve. I had forgotten these off-shoot films were originally pitched as being in the Star Wars galaxy but totally separate in location and characters, a chance to show us what was going on elsewhere.

I really wish they had stuck with that plan as they would have had so many more options to be creative with. I look forward to seeing this film but honestly, none of my friends are talking about this film and I've seen very little excitement online either. I wonder what the numbers will be like.

Its funny that people now feel like there are too many Star Wars films coming out yet they lap up soooo many Marvel films in that time. So much potential in this franchise, why didn't they just keep to that plan of original, creative and separate stories?

Love Steve's utter hatred of TLJ :D

Think I'll give this one a miss until it crops up on Netflix.

I saw Force, Rogue, Jedi and Solo at midnight screenings on their opening nights and the first three were packed. There were only 10 of us in the cinema last night. The manager told me they were showing Solo on five screens but had only sold 60 tickets. It might be due to Star Wars fatigue, it might be due to a lack of interest in Solo but I honestly think it's a backlash because of The Last Jedi.

I'd love to see the coming of age movie of The Max Rebo Band and how Max, Sy Snootles and Droopy McCool ended up at Hutts palace. :D

I've just got back from a morning showing. No more than fifteen people in the cinema. For me, the biggest problem was the fact that the image was so...dull. Honestly, it looked as though the entire film was shot by candlelight. I had real difficulty seeing what was going on. I thought it was a projection problem, but having read Steve's review, it seems it was intentional. As for the story, I was severely underwhelmed, bored almost. And I've got a real problem with the 'surprise’ towards the end. I just can't work out the timelines . (Unless of course I've missed something in the cartoon tv series which I admit I've not watched.) I came out of TLJ hating it, but I still saw it four times at the cinema and really appreciate it now. I came out of "Solo" thinking, "meh", and having no desire to see it again.

Dull image? Cant wait to see this in 3D on Sunday then!

Not enough put downs of TLJ by Steve in the review though. I jest, I really liked TLJ and what it tried to do. Didn't always get it right but childhood killer?......

Anyway, looking forward to a decidedly average, overly dark (image, not content) movie....I think I'm most looking forward to seeing Childish Calrissian. Ever since watching Community I've been a fan of DG.

The imax showing was about 80% full I attended at midnight. The multiple 2D screenings were virtually empty though apparently.

My screening was in 2D, but during the film I was actually thinking that it would be unwatchable in 3D.

I thought it was fine. It was a murky sort of film at times, but I never found it to dark.

Thanks for the review! I's good to know that this is a fun movie. So long as it doesn't include intergalactic force communication/hard light hologram-type powers that wind up causing unexpected death, I suspect I will like it.

You don't think this could be down to PJ/screen set up issues regarding the staff members do you? It strikes me as odd that some have said it's dark (the image not the subject matter)

Unfortunately I won't be able to get to the cinema to see Solo, but will definitely buy it on disc. Seems like a load of fun.

Next up: Hutt: A Star Wars Story

The story of a vile gangster's rise to wealth and power.

Was there ever a reason given to why they are releasing this one in the old Star Wars time slot of May instead of the new Disney time slot of December?

Just appears like they really want this one to fail so they can stop the spin off fan service to OT fans and replace it with the Rian Johnson saga/crap asap :suicide:

The original plan was to move to May releases with TLJ (Star Wars 40th anniversary) but Rian Johnson needed more time, so they switched to a December release. The May release of Episode IX has also been moved to December, to give JJ Abrams more time to clean up the mess left after Colin Trevorrow's departure. For some reason they stuck with the May release of Solo, but it would have made more sense to release it in December. That month has worked out well for them so far and it would have given Ron Howard more time to finish the film. In addition, May/June has a lot of big hitting films coming out and I think Solo will struggle to compete.
