I found this on Xploited.com, and thought I'd take a risk and buy a copy.

    Soldier Blue

It will be interesting if it really is fully uncut including the famous, "it's no good crying over spilt milk" sequence.

I tried to buy one from the Amazon German site as they are only
E5.5 ($5.5) But they won't send them to the UK (prohibited). The site you
suggested say "Out of Stock", were they in stock whan you ordered?

I got mine from amazon germany. Had no problems. Delivery was very quick too.
It's a good disc. Picture and sound were good. The ending is very brutal.

Thanks m8, it was only the E5.5 they wouldn't ship to the UK. My German
wasn't good enough to understand the difference. I have now managed to
order this title for E21.25 (£14) expensive, but I finally got one!

    Hi,

I don't mean to take the wind out of your sails, folks, but I think this may be an edited version! :(

According to Amazon.de, the version you are buying is 109 minutes. The totally uncut version, should run for at least 114 minutes, at PAL frame rate, and about 119 minutes at NTSC frame rate.

The UK version, was released in both the cut 109 minute version, and then a nearly-uncut version, running at 114 minutes. However, this second version, had 36 seconds deleted out of the rape sequence. (The former has the end scene hacked to pieces, and the editing is obvious!)

I hope you do get a full and uncensored version, but I don't think you will. Even the last BBC2 screening, around one year ago to the day, was the same 114 (minus 36 seconds) version, as the BBFC have approved.

A shame that this doesn't get a full and uncut release in the USA on Criterion, or Anchor Bay. It deserves to be seen, the way it was originally made.

There's an extensive thread on this very film on this very site

According to this link, this is a new German release and not the previous version which was identical to the UK print. Here's a link Pooch, check it out and see what you think. Soldier Blue

The IMDB site lists details of what the uncut version should contain if you look at the message boards down below.

According to my Leonard Maltin movies guide book it states Soldier Blue was recut for a PG rating in America during the seventies or an M rating as they called it back then.

This begs the question, what version was released in Europe and in the UK ?

The disc is excellent. Its uncut and once you select English on the initial screen the entire disc runs in English, including audio and menus. All the infamous moments like the children being beheaded and shot, aswell as the rape sequence culminating in the woman having her breast cut off are all there.

Apart from the last 20 minutes, is it actually a good film, worth purchasing? I have my finger on the 'buy' button at Amazon.de, and I've never seen it. [IMG]

    Just received mine
It appears to be totally uncut, as well as including the rape and beheading shots there are various additional and bloodthirsty shots throughout the battle sequence that never appeared on the British (uncut) VHS release. Well worth buying IMHO

Does the gore enhance the point it is trying to make, tho, or are you buying it just as a gore movie?

It's absolutely atypical for a Ralph Nelson film...

    Hi,

Well, I'm genuinely pleased that I was wrong about this being a censored cut. Thanks to everyone for helping Xusia (and the rest of us) finally locate a full and uncut version of this film!

As for whether the film is any good, well, as you would expect it's up fore debate.

Personally speaking, I found the film very good. It was historicaly interesting, the acting was reasonable, and the film's final scene of slaughter, does add a nasty edge of what happens in a massacre.

Whether this will be your sole reason for buying the disc, depends on what you are looking for. If you want a controversial film, with plenty of gore, then this isn't really what you want. If you want something intelligent, and showing another side to what traditional westerns depict, then by all means buy it, but just be aware that it does have a controversial sequence for the last 10-15 minutes, which you may be offended or disturbed by.

I'd like to think, though, that this film is being bought by people for the whole film, and not just the final scenes of slaughter. :lesson:

I cancelled my order from Xploited.com and picked up a copy from the Cinema Store this lunchtime. I was considering posting some screen captures, but on mature reflection do not think that is appropriate. I may post links and host them on my own server.

It's been a while since I've seen this film so rather than just jump straight to the massacre, I'll settle down tonight and watch the whole film and then post my thoughts on the matter.

A good film, but very much a product of the 70's. The massacre is still powerful, but not as half as bad as what a lot of people may have imagined. Watch it along with "Ulzana's Raid", another post Vietnam, revisionist western.

I taken 4 screen captures, but for some reason, the aspect ratio was changed so I altered it using PhotoShop. Hopefully I've got it right. Please be aware of the adult content/imagery etc.

I quite enjoyed the movie. It was almost a buddy movie, during the first half, and the massacre is indeed powerful, but the special effects were quite crude, and unconvincing, compared to this day and age. It was quite obvious that the decapitation was a dummy, as was the baby on the sabre (of course!), and a lot of the more horrific stuff took place off screen, i.e. the 'Put her out of her misery' scene, and the shooting of the babies. I wasn't as shocked as I was prepared to be, given the notoriety of the film, but then, I think most of us have become a little desensitised over the years. Nothing even makes me jump in movies any more, although there is that bit in Dawn Of The Dead 2004, where you just know he's behind the bathroom door!
