That doesn't sound like a softmod to me, more like a mod-chip has been fitted

Softmods are functionally equivalent to modding with a chip. There is nothing that a mod-chip enables that a softmod cannot do although some things like adding a larger hard disk can be more fiddly to set up.

    Cheers

Hmm, so why pay £45 for a chip when you say a soft mod will do the same thing. I have mine soft modded using the splinter cell game save which gave me access to the NTSC video output but i definately can't stream media from my pc through my xbox, i cant save games to the HD, i can't play cd/dvd-r's, i can't us XBMC. so it looks to me like there are a lot of things a modchip can do that softmodding can't

I recently set up a mates xbox with XBMC as the dashboard using splinter cell exploit (SID 3) and AID 2.02 software. Its exactly the same as a chipped box and can do all the above.

Catch? Well you can't play on Live! with this set up so that rules it out for me.

From what I understand the modchip has the fuction of BIOS backup and update, without touching the original MS BIOS. If your softmodded box BIOS gets fragged.:suicide:

horny, have you found out if softmodding will get you kicked off live. I have softmodded my xbox using the SC save so I could get the high def options for my plasma. I was going to buy Black Hawk Down NTSC as it isnt out for another 2 months in Britain to play the multiplayer.

Softmodding for High Def Output won't get you kicked off Live but it won't let you play NTSC games either.

Personally, I don't like the idea of softmodding an Xbox - it should still be able to be run from it's original BIOS. A lot of people, going by what's been written, have problems with softmodded Xbox's.

Xlink Kai is a superb remedy for Xbox Live, which has a good built-in UI within XBMC.

    PS. Buy an Xecuter 2.6!
