Mitsubishi Electric to Repair Defective Wide-Screen TV Sets
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Source: Kyodo News International

Kyodo News International via NewsEdge Corporation : Aug. 19--TOKYO--Mitsubishi Electric Corp. said Tuesday it will repair about 27,500 wide-screen color TV sets at the request of customers as it has detected a defect which causes them to emit smoke among other problems.
The TVs in question are 6,322 units of the 28W-CZ22 model and 21,200 units of the 28T-D301 model manufactured between September 1999 and December 2001.

The major consumer electronics and electric machinery maker said the cause of the problems was mainly insufficient soldering at the back of the cathode-ray tube.

When smoke is emitted, a protective circuit switches off the TV, so the damage can be contained, the company said. Other problems involve deformed screen images and TVs automatically switching off, it said.

Mitsubishi Electric said it had received about 80 inquiries concerning the problems by the end of July.
