Been imposed in the family that we just don't do Christmas. Sucks and when I have a family of my own I'm definitely going to be doing it, having missed out myself I would never want any kids of mine to have that same feeling. Anyone else had this experience? (only reason I was ever given was because its nothing to do with Muslims).

Me, in the exact same scenario you have, i will definitely give my kids a christmas :)

You ever feel a sense of, idk missing something big every year? Usually by this time I'm quite drunk and sleep through most of Christmas day. This year I just kinda went well you know what I don't really have the cash nor can I be arsed with a hangover. So I'm kinda dealing with it from a more philosophical view point.

I'm not religious in any way shape or form, and have often wondered if by celebrating Xmas I was being a hypocrite, but I don't do it for the religious side of it, if it's meant to be the day Jesus was born or not I couldn't frankly give a hoot!

To me and many others I'd imagine it's about spending quality time with your family, indulging in excesses that you might not normally do, and generally having a good time, kids love the whole Santa idea, and why not. Doesn't hurt anyone, much like the tooth fairy.

I feel sorry for the position you are both in and hope that when you are able to you both enjoy many many happy Christmases in the future.

If I'm honest among mates I'm known as Scrooge lol. Next year onwards I'll be celebrating. Even if it's with mates and not family. But likewise, I've always wanted to do it for the coming together, chilling out with cousins. All that kind of jazz.

I thought partaking in alcohol was against your religion?

If you are ignoring that part of your religion, then why not do Christmas?

I will add at this point that I'm not religious. It's just been imposed on me, I don't eat pork, believe in heaven and hell, occasionally pray. But that's about it. And yeah I plan to but it's not that simple when you're the only one who does it.

Good point but I'd guess what he is getting at is it's ok for him to go out and drink but celebrating Xmas at home with his family can't be done due to the beliefs.

This is ever so slightly off topic and by all means tell me to naff off, but you say your not religious, but then say you pray? And believe in heaven and hell?

Is this not a contradiction?

Personally, I think Christmas has long lost it's true meaning nowadays and has become far too commercialised.

I would like to see people of all faiths enjoy the season for what it is...a time for holidaying, family get together, have a nice meal, share gifts etc

Couldn't agree more, it shouldn't matter where your from or what religion you believe in if any at all.

Bah Humbug!

Each to their own, but I don't see the point of going completely mental just for the sake of two whole days. To me, it's just a fabricated consumer charade and I was gutted when I realised that my parents had lied to me and they were responsible for the presents under the tree!:(

People look at me pityingly when I say that I'm not doing anything special and I'll be on my own. Little do they realise that I get to choose what I do and who I have contact with, nothing is done out of duty and I don't have to pretend to be enjoying myself.

And what's with all the mountains of food and packaging? Just how much gets wasted and/or thrown away at this time of the year?

But it's always good to have time off work and that is more than enough to have a celebration about!

The believing in heaven and hell not so much, that's technically a philosophical view point, as for the praying, I don't know how much you know about islam, I don't do the whole 5 times a day praying nor the Friday prayer, I just do the eid prayers twice yearly cuz I'm told to go...

I think the biggest problem these days is that people don't spend enough quality time together, Xmas is a good excuse for this.

Yes we shouldnt need an excuse, but unfortunately life gets in the way sometimes so having Xmas time is a good enough reason.

Although it is completely commercial as far as buying food/drink and all those presents, no one is making anybody buy all this stuff, if you can't afford much don't buy much. We are not doing our parents this year and they are not buying us presents either as we could all do with the extra money really.

Thats the biggest thing for me, feels like everyone else is doing something really major but for me its the day of the year where theres really bad tv on and no shops are open so all i do is try and sleep off a horrible hangover

Probably MORE to do with the fact (seeing as you've said you're Muslim), that it (IIRC) would be a sin for your family to do so. Might want to rethink that intention to do so eh? ;)

You're so similar to what I'm like in that regard haha.

And what on earth is IIRC? It's not a sin of any sort given it's celebrated in turkey (where we're from) our lot were just too srcooge ish.

It isn't hypocritical for atheists to celebrate xmas. The ceremony was originally pagan to celebrate the winter solstice and was adopted by early Christianity in an attempt to win pagan converts. I am more than happy to drink and eat myself silly to celebrate the beginning of the end of dark mornings and short days.

Ahh, so it's Christmas today...I thought it was a bit much of a fuss just for my birthday. :D

(PS I'm celebrating both).

Actually it IS a sin. I know drinking is quite common in Turkey and many other countries with a large number of Muslims, doesn't make it OK (according to Islam).

Either discuss it with your local Imam, if you don't believe me; or do your own research.

edit:

Its not celebrating Christmas per se that's a sin. Its joining any occasions/event that are not in-line with Islam, as doing might be perceived as an endorsement of that event. This is the crux of the issue.

I've never really celebrated it, I've bought people pressies, but as me and the ex split up I'm not seeing my little girl, till boxing day at least, so I won't be celebrating it neither,

I am not celebrating it as I am working away. :(
I am currently in the middle of a very stormy north sea.
Someone has keep your lots gas and oil supplies going to enable you to cook your lunches. :)

Totally agree, barely anyone seems to practise pagan rituals any more, and most people seem to think it has something to do with Jesus. In spite of the church nicking Saturnalia!
